Will the villagers only wear shirts I give them? What about dresses or skirts or kilts or hats and bla bla all that jazz.
What about dress outfits?
Anyone have any experience in this?
They only wear shirts, and they may or may not wear shirts that you give or mail to them. I tend to mail shirts to villagers if I want them to wear it, but half of the time it ends up as furniture in their houses. My Mira has a Varia suit, I thought it was appropriate.
They can also put on shirts that another villager gives to them (you can see them having a conversation and then one will flip into a new outfit), and they can take shirts that are set out at Able's - chances are you've got the basic stuff set out at the beginning of the game made by "Someone" at "Anytown." Sometimes they'll put these on on their own, in which case your villagers will drone on about how much they love the designer "Someone."
And finally, they can also start fashion trends - one character can have an outfit (a real shirt or a design from Able's) and will pass it on to other villagers. I always hate when half of my town ends up wearing that silly orange shirt from Able's, but I haven't taken the time to make my own patterns and replace them.
Oh yeah, sheep don't wear shirts, they have a scarf. So if you give them an outfit, the pattern will be all over the scarf. I don't know if there are other species that do this, sheep are the only ones I've seen like this.
A good trick I've heard is that if an animal already put a shirt you sent them up as furniture, the second time you sent they'll wear it for sure. I've yet to test it extensively but it might be worth it to keep trying if you REALLY want your animal to be wearing a certain outfit
