Smash Bros Using any unlockable character amiibo without unlocking them beforehand

Given it's incredibly easy to unlock characters by doing a certain number of Smash matches, you'd be baffled that I was too lazy to unlock every character on both my Wii U and 3DS version.
Since one of the amiibo I've gotten recently is Dark Pit and curiosity struck on me afterwards, I thought about trying to use him despite not having unlocked him yet.

And to my surprise, the game actually didn't denied that amiibo. He functioned just like every other Smash amiibo would despite the fact he isn't unlocked yet. I'm not sure using him in a match is going to automatically unlock the character in question, but I'm not holding my breath for that matter.

There you have it, I guess... Feel free to use any amiibo of a character that you may not have unlocked for some reason.

Yea, the amiibo allow you to create an amiibo of that character regardless if you've unlocked them, but it doesn't unlock the character.

Kinda annoyed because I was hoping I could buy a Lucas amiibo and unlock him instead of paying for the DLC (would much rather pay like 4x the amount for the figure than 4x less for the DLC LOL). Guess I don't really need to buy a Lucas amiibo now, and have no reason to buy Ryu or Roy.

I agree. It would of been so cool if Nintendo made amiibos to unlock other rewards in-game too like new characters :/

Yeah, that is probably true. The amiibos are nice and all, but if you compare the bare price of what a Lucas amiibo would be for example and how much he would cost by himself as purchase-able DLC in-game, it would be more worth it to get him digitally through the Eshop
