I am afraid I will end up erasing a town. Here's the issue.

I have 2 ACNL cartridges

I have two 3DS Units. One is a new 3DS XL. The other is an old 3DS - someone was discarding it and gave it to me. I do not really have any contact with them, so I do not know the code to get in and add a connection. So the unit has not been updates in a long time (Version 9.x) and has no internet access.

Neither town is on the current date. One is in Summer and the other in Fall. But both DS units are on the exact same date and time so I can switch cartridges back and forth.

I update town one in the new 3 DS. Then I put town 2 in. Oddly when the game opened the summer town was no clearly fall. However, once isabelle and I left the station it was back to summer. The update went fine on that game. I put town one back in the DS and returned town 2 to the old DS. Again the opening sequence had shifted to fall. I figured that was no big deal this time. However when the game started up the choices were "new save file" "move in" or "update data." The update of course cannot be done since the unit cannot access the internet. The other two options sound like I am getting a new town. I shut the game off in a panic. Although I do not the opening sequence still showed my town.

What have I done? How can I play this game in the old DS. In effort to organize all my hoarded items I had split them between the two towns so I need to go back and forth a lot. Why can I not just start the game? Have I somehow erased it?

How is this going to work when I want to upload the HHD data from one HHD cartridge to both towns (provided I did not lose one)?

I hope this all makes sense. I am panicking to the point of incoherence..

The update is saved to the SD card, not the cart. So you will need to switch the sd cards and then download the update and switch back. I think.

Wait for someone else to confirm

Um... can't you get past the parental controls by just doing a factory reset? You probably wouldn't lose much and eShop purchases are linked to systems.

Also, I'm not sure what you're on about with HHD. You just select the relevant option from ACNL's home screen, say if you have a physical or downloaded copy and follow the instructions. It doesn't need two systems, even if both your ACNL and HHD copies are cartridges, as somehow it supports swapping them without the game locking or quitting. Magic, eh?

I did not eve try the HHD thing because I never expected switching would work as that always makes a mess if say a cartridge pops out. Great if that works well now.

I had not realized a factory reset was possible. I would loose 1000 miis but I have the same ones and more on my own system. I would lose a complete set of streetpass puzzle pieces, but again I accomplished that on both systems so no big deal really.

Since you need to have the update on both to go back and forth, I think your only solution is the factory reset option, that way you can have both 3DSs updated. I did notice that you can no longer streetpass anyone with a different version now, and I think you can't visit either. I don't think you'll lose your towns either way though! Good luck!
