Sometimes, unlockables can be okay. However, I feel that most of the time they aren't. One of the worst unlockables are unlockable characters in my opinion. The worst offenders are Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. In super smash bros. you have to defeat a character to unlock them and if you lose, you have to start all over again to initiate the battle again. This can get frustrating and repetitive very fast if you keep losing to them. I know Brawl had the subspace emissary story mode that allows you to unlock the majority of characters except toon link and wolf. However, that is a chore too especially since they exclude those two characters. You have to unlock those two normally.

Mario Kart is even worse, it makes you complete some of the most ridiculous or tedious tasks just so you can unlock a certain character such as completing a certain amount of ghost data or winning a certain cup. Why can't you just have all of the characters? They don't even benefit to gameplay like that.

In my opinion, Super Smash Bros should do some other approach that is less tedious and repetitive than what Brawl and it predecessors did. As far as mario kart goes, have all of the characters available right off the bat. There are plenty of more unlockables such as courses and karts.

However, the karts are a bit annoying to unlock too in my opinion, but they could resolve this by including a money system. The game can give you money for doing races, winning cups and the like and you can use that money to buy karts (However, since 7 exists, it could be car parts)

How do you feel about unlockables? Are there certain unlockables you like or don't like? Are there games that you think don't use unlockables in a reasonable or fair way?

In a game like Mario Kart they aren't just unlockables, they're more like goals or achievements. It gives you something to work towards since there isn't a plot or storyline. The Smash Bros. ones could be better, perhaps having different criteria for unlocking each character?

Jeez, after reading your whole post it seems like you want everything in the game to be spoon-fed to you.

I like unlockables... Especially for Mario Kart, because I always feel excited when I unlock a new character~ It gives you the motive to actually complete those tasks.

My favorite part of a game is the unlockables, especially in Smash Bros & Mario Kart.

It's a very special moment when, after failing for the umpteenth time to achieve something, you manage it. So no, I don't mind unlockables, especially for games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., since they add a lot to the single player experience.

I agree. Why would you play a game where everything is already available for you? It just makes the game become very boring, very quickly. Plus, with things that are hard to unlock, it shows you had the time, dedication, skill and perseverance to do what many people didn't. It differentiates people, and these days it's all about differentiating yourself from the crowd :P I know I'm always impressed whenever I see people with the golden driving wheel on MK7 on wifi.

I guess you can sorta relate this to AC because when some people TT to "unlock" T&T emporium, they quickly report being bored and make resetting threads xD

I am kind of embarrased to say this, but I believe I am. However, I don't understand what made me like this. It might just be my own opinion and views though.

I believe I played games that did that and I absolutely was content and had a lot of fun with them. However, again that's just because of my taste in games. I personally find having to meet certain criterias or waiting to unlock something not fun. If anything, I would rather a game do unlockables the way NintendoLand and Game & Wario did. Game & Wario gave you coins for meeting certain criterias in minigames and for just booting up the game to play it for a day. You could then use those coins to unlock prizes. Nintendo Land does basically the same thing. You get coins from meeting certain criterias or just playing minigames. You can these coins to play this coin machine game to win prizes.

In a nutshell, I would rather a game reward you just for playing it.

What happens when you 'finish' a game? (Not all games have an official ending, hence the 'finish') One of my favourite games of all time is Final Fantasy X and I've completed it 4/5 times now. The last 2 times, I've gone back to try and unlock everything I possibly could, simply because it would let me experience the game in a new way. New weapons, new abilities, stronger characters, I do love it. Some games they do feel slightly pointless, but I still like the fact they're there o3o Unlockables offer a better re-play value to a game. If I spend ?30 on a game, I expect to be able to play it over and over again and uncover new things. I liked Tomb Raider Anniversary's unlockables with unlockable cheats! That definitely gave me an incentive to play again and again xD

Most of the time I don't have a problem with unlockables. I just hate it when they're ridiculously tedious (require hundreds of hours of play just to unlock a stupid costume that doesn't do anything and doesn't look that good) or ridiculously hard (see some of the costumes in Rock Band 3 that require you to be super, super good at REAL guitar, something that can take years IRL to achieve).

I thought I was alone on this, but I now I have learned "You are never alone on anything on the internet".

I agree too. I especially don't like it when DLC costs money. Why should I or anyone else have to pay extra for something that could easily be added into the game in the first place?
