Through my experiance playing AC:NL I have found a few things that I think are not known by many that should be said! They are amusing to try and are pretty handy when you are lacking bells or just bored.
1st
In the begging of the game when you do not have a sling shot, (this works after you found one too.) and you pocess a net if you find a baloon just about to go above the cliff near the beach you can swing your net on it when next to the cliff and the present will drop. I am not sure if this would work on presents with multiple baloons. Beware that if this is done where the beach is not then your present will be lost forever.
2nd
When you are either invited to a villagers house or just happen to stumble in if you talk to them a couple of times and then you look into one of their closets theres a possiblity you will find something. The item will be disclosed after the inital quote where it says things like, 'This is a mess.' or 'It's a treasure chest in here.' Then it says something like, "Oh, look at this I have found a lotus lamp.' Then the villager will ask you if you'd like it. If you say yes your charactar will do the cute dance like when it completes it's loan.
Well, really I have only found those but still they're cool right?
