So Pietro pinged me telling me that he wanted to trade a gold nugget for a kiddie stereo, so I declined it and after that, he started looking bummed out like after you hit a villager with a net.

This is the first time this has happened to me whenever I declined to trade with someone.

I think reactions might be something that just varies with specific personalities. For example, sometimes when I buy something off Deirdre, she'll respond well and start trouncing around and singing the town tune. I've only ever had that reaction, in that context, from uchi villagers.

This happened to me with Julian, he asked for something and I declined and he got sad like your Pietro :( I'm trying hard not to junk up their houses so I deny their furniture requests!

They are smug they just feel so sad if the trade doesn't work
With the stone
I had Lionel sad because I dint trade him a amesthy for a shirt

Oh yeah, certain personalities do that. Uchis get really happy sometimes when you do something for them, smugs get sad, and lazies also get sad when you deny their request sometimes. I wish it was a universal thing, maybe some doing it more than others. It's strange that emotions are restricted to only some villager types.

Oh yeah, the smugs are very over sensitive. Marshal and Julian keep offering me their poems and then saying they're not good enough, then offer something else and when I say no they get all dramatic and need to be alone for a while ;) that is why I love smugs so much. Such melodrama over the smallest of things.
The only other personality I know to overact to things like this is the uchis. Give them something for free when that option comes up and they skip away singing.

i think some reactions really are restricted to certain personalities. sometimes after i talk to uchis, they start doing that thought bubble thing, which usually only happens if you talk to someone too much. i've only had this happen with tammy and sylvia, who are the only uchis i've ever had.

Note what you all say on personality types, I often refuse - visits that are not immediate, collecting sigs as well as rare fish/bugs I happen to be carrying - I minimise it by always having things like gold ore in a letter as they will ask for it. And have under 1k bells showing.

However this does curtail the game somewhat but I find it hard to change my ways, even tho I know/understand that I would eventually get more if I fulfilled requests than when I don't.

I think it's a feature that happens with the smugs, since they always tend to be one of the more emotional and dramatic villagers. They usually say something like their heart is broken because you wouldn't trade and they get really sad about it. LOL, I've had it happen with Marshal needless to say I felt a little guilty but the originality of his house was more important to me LOL. It's a bit melodramatic but I like that the smugs are more open about their emotions and let you know when you've upset them instead of getting angry haha.
