I never open my gate unless I'm about to trade or something like that. And as soon as they're done doing whatever, I end the session and my gates are closed. I'm paranoid about leaving them open and someone coming in and destroying my town or something.

But if I ever forget, I hope someone drops stuff in my town overnight.

Lol, that's silly. Takes less time to just take it all to retail than take it to someone's town. Strange.
