So, I'm a bit confused. I remember reading that we're supposed to have between 190-220 trees or something of the like and that it counts all trees: fruit, cedar, hardwood and bamboo.
But I saw a 5-star rating guide that said "it doesn't really matter how many trees you have as long as you don't cut too many down" (loose quote). Which is weird cause it doesn't state a minimum so I'm not sure if there's supposed to be a minimum or if that means as long as you have enough other junk (scenery/furniture etc.) the number of trees truly don't matter?

When you speak to Isabelle she'll say something like "Plant more saplings!" If you don't have enough trees iirc but I'm not sure how many there are for her to say that

I don't think there's really any set guide that anyone knows for sure how it works. The Companion Guide states that you get 1 point per tree for a maximum of 190, but doesn't say that there's any downside to having more than that 190.
Yet I've seen some people say that there IS a downside to going over in the form of losing points.
I've also heard a couple of people around the interwebs claim that bushes count towards the tree limit which would suck if it was true but I'm not sure it is.

Bushes do not count! I have nearly 220 trees and planted loads of shrubs and Isabelle didn't say anything about there being too many trees

im currently working on my island and i was so worried that this would be an issue!! im glad it wont be

From what I can tell, having furniture and flowers seems to balance out an overabundance of trees and weeds. I haven't counted all of the trees (or weeds) on my island, but it is heavily forested* with lots of weeds and it is 5 star.

*It has trees all over the island, but not as densely forested as some islands I've seen where you can't see the ground for all of the trees. I can't comment to that.

Oh thank god. I could've sworn there a thread a couple days ago saying it did so I've been holding off. It's funny, shrubs do fulfill the nook mile quest to plant a tree

For my island Isabelle told me that at 4 stars I had "too many trees" and once I cut several down I literally had a 5 star rating the next day.

I have no idea what to do with my trees so the less I can have the better right now lol
