Transferring between 2 3DSs

So I currently play ACNL on both a cartridge and digital copy on my own 3DS XL. My brother recently came home from college and I asked him to bring his new 3ds xl with him so I could use his to transfer some items from my older digital copy to my cartridge. However, when I put my physical copy into his 3ds it just shows up with nothing saved D: I know its saved to the memory card but obviously I cant move over the SD card from my old 3ds to his since the digital copy is there.

tl;dr: is there a way to transfer items/visit my 2nd town with 2 separate DSs if I started both towns on one ds?

Did you install the update on his 3DS as well? The update goes to the SD card (even though your cartridge is updated as well) so the game needs to find it there.

oh so the save file wont be there without the update dowloaded?

You need that update file in the SD card to play an updated game normally.....I think you can just get it in the e-shop?

updated to say it seems confirmed that you cannot play at all in a 3DS without the update. But you should be able to just update it in the e-shop and then open your game with no trouble!

It worked! This was the first time I tried using 2 DSs with my own copies so wasn't sure if it never worked or if it was the update

You do in fact need to update to play the save file
