So, I'm new to acnl, and so my town is a little ugly... if you have any advice please share any tips!

The first thing you should probably get down on would have to be the basics. Learn how stuff works, get a feel for your town and complete your mayoral rating/building permit. Once all that is out of the way things really start to pick up! If you've already done this then you're set to g.
A great place to start when envisioning your town is the internet. Do some research on other people's towns to get some inspiration on how you want things to go. Look up the various kinds of flowers, fruits, trees, and bushes. Learning about the various PWPs you might want in the future is super fun as well! Once you unlock the QR code machine (after talking to Sable for a while, it will appear in the Able Sister's shop) you can place down patterns that look like pathways or decor. This can help tie a town's aesthetic together.
And don't forget- getting a town to look prettier takes some time and patience. My town still looks a little sad and I've been playing for a while, lol. Good luck!

Your new villagers will move in and build their houses in the worst places. Just embrace it and let things develop organically for now - you might find a surprising beauty in the randomness if you work around it.
Later, once you've unlocked everything you all the bells, you can look up the objectively insane (but totally viable) methods people employ to cycle out villagers and micro-manage their town layout. Don't sweat it for now though.
