I'm getting to the point in my AC:NL game that I'm wanting to start planning out the layout of my town (starting public works, have a couple different kinds of fruit trees, want to organize my flowers better, etc). Someone suggested to me once to actually draw it out, but that seems like it'll end up being pretty inaccurate. Does anyone have any tips, or know of any tools I can use to help me get going on this?

You could always use tiles in your town as place holders for certain things to help you visualize :)

I've used Excel to plan parts of my town when needing to place PWP. ~ Damn Isabelle is so fussy. I ended up spending like an hour putting down a load of patterns to get the distances of everything and running Isabelle back and fourth to find out how close to things I could put different sized PWP (Due to this being between my plaza, river, station, pond and a rock there was a lot to check!) Then I drew out a few different layouts to decide how I wanted things.

Here's what became my final image. ~ now I'm slowly putting my PWP in, though I've changed my mind several times on odd little bits, but each time I've referred back to this and updated, so it's been really helpful.

Hmmm, excel is certainly doable. Did you do the research yourself, via Isabelle about the sizes of things, or is that information available online somewhere? I'd like to streamline as much as possible :)

I wasn't sure if any info online was going to be right, but there wasn't much that wasn't obvious anyway. All PWP need a space all around them but rocks, ponds and the river don't need an extra space. - I thought they might.
And the plaza and station I can't remember, But I surrounded them with bushes anyway so it didn't make much difference.

EDIT: actually glad I posted that pic now, just noticed I can't fit both my hammock and bus shelter below my path. :S Though I haven't had them suggested yet anyway.

Hah. Glad I could help then. How common is it to get villagers to request a public work? I'd like a hammock as well. Chose to build a new bridge as my first pwp, because I desperately need one, so I have time to figure stuff out, but...

There are some pups I'd like to have more than once, flower beds and streetlights for instance. Is that possible?

Depends on how you play to how many PWP requests you get. I currently get a PWP suggestion each day because for some weird reason as I run back and fourth across my town moving my flowers my villagers ping about once every 5 minutes. ~ This also happens if you go diving for a couple minutes, so people often dive and catch a couple things and then stalk their villagers to see if they can force suggestions out of them. ~ If you're pockets are full with stuff they can't buy it also increases the chance they'll suggest something as it prevents certain conversations with them.

I believe streetlights (and benches, the pyramid and several other things) you can have up to 8, but not sure on the flower beds, but I know you can have atleast 2. Though some PWP you can only have 1.
