hi there! I'm still not fully decided on all of my dream villagers yet, I want them to fit my theme and be generally appealing to me.
but a huge issue I've ran into is

ALL OF THE VILLAGERS I WANT ARE SMUG, LAZY OR NORMAL.
literally, scrolling down the list and picking out villagers I think would fit my town I realised that 90% of them were one of those 3 personalities (if you check the spoiler in my sig you'll see what I mean)
so I just wanted some advice

is it better to choose the villagers you truly want, or is it better to try and make your town varied in personality?
would love some second opinions. atm the only personality dupe I have in my town is snooty, and snooty is one of my favourites so I actually enjoy having one extra. anyone else got a lot of dupes on their island? does the dialogue get repetitive or is it not too noticeable?

Up to you really, i have a lot of the same personality villagers but i like them so it doesnt bother me. Go for whoever you like honestly

What’s your Dreamies again? Can you share a list or general which Villagers or Species you like? It’s easier to decide then.

It's your game, your town. You do whatever you want.

Personally, I want all villager types at least present. And I do have favorites among all types. Plus, there's some room for some extras of the same personality types.

(the problem is that right now my town has three Peppy villagers, two Jocks, two Lazys and no Cranky or Snooty, and I want to fix that.)

Most replies will tell you "do what you want!" So this is probably unpopular but: you will burn out easier on the game if you don't have more variety. I'm already getting repeated dialog from each villager, and having many multiples of the same personality can reduce their specialness to you over time - they just seem more mechanical.

I think it's also a good exercise to try to learn to love some villagers rather than pursuing all your dreamies. Sometimes getting everything you want feels... unsatisfactory.

my dreamies (at the moment) are Sherb, Pietro, Coco, Julian, Tia, Ruby, Muffy, Stitches, Raddle, Kiki as in my sig. villagers I definitely could never part with would be Sherb, Pietro, Coco, Julian, Stitches and Kiki. the other ones would break my heart a lil to change but I would consider it if I found another good fit lol

also my theme is trippy, psychedelic and galaxy themed with creepy undertones. although uhh i guess to make it sound less convoluted you could just call it surreal lol

yeah, I appreciate everyone saying "do what you want!" it's comforting... but uhh I'm just not sure if I can handle 5 normal villagers. normal aint my fave but im still definitely considering it because on the other hand I really want my island to be perfect. I might end up feeling unsatisfied if my final villagers aren't really my jam. no matter which I choose I may end up dying on the inside just a lil teensy bit and if you think about it, isn't that what animal crossing is all about?

I would also say just go with whoever appeals to you most, because even if some of the dialogue is the same, I find it that when I really like a villager they develop their own quirks and traits in my head... For exemple, I had two jocks at one point, Antonio and Teddy, but while I found that Teddy matched my town's color scheme and I liked his house better, Antonio was just so much more charming to me, so I kept him instead.

So I would also recommend going through the other personalities and giving some others a try if you think that having only those personalities would bother you. You never know who might grow on you... Even if you don't like their specific dialogue the conversations between personalty types are so much fun!

You might have to go through a lot of villagers until you get all your dreamies, so my advice would be to keep an open mind about them!

I also checked your signature and I think your dreamie list is pretty sweet! Love Kiki and Coco, they're on my list too!

All up to you, honestly. It’s your game so your opinion on it weighs the most. For me personally, however, I tend to make it a point to have one of each personality because of dialogue variation. I don’t like repeating dialogues. Especially if I have a dreamie of a certain personality, I only make sure to keep that one because if there’s another villager saying the same things my most loved villager is saying, it takes away so much from my experience because then it would feel like what my favorite says is no longer “special” since someone else says the same thing. I know everything they say is scripted and everyone from the same personality pool are meant to say the same dialogues but it’s different just knowing it and personally witnessing it happening in game. Takes away a lot for me and makes the dreamies feel less “special” and the connection with them less “deep”. For example, Marshal is my ultimate fave for sentimental reasons dating back to my previous games. I don’t have him yet so I’ll be ok with having more than one smug. Once he moves in, however, I won’t want any other smug because I only want to hear smug dialogues from Marshal. Hearing the same things from another villager who’s not him at the same time will just ruin things for me. However, since there are only 8 personality types you’re bound to have two duplicates no matter. I leave that space for a personality I don’t have a dreamie of, if I can. So even if they repeat dialogues, it won’t affect me.

I choose the ones that I want, but I also keep in mind the personality types and try to get at least 1 of each. The 2 extra slots aren't reserved for any of the personality types, and I just fill them with whatever villagers I find and really like. (currently the extra slots are filled by Bones (Lazy) and Vivian (snooty)). In this game so far, I've been waiting for an open plot, then I go search for a villager of that personality if I'm lacking one, and invite the first one that I like of that personality. I've invited villagers that I don't love, but also don't absolutely hate. This allows me to experience new villagers that I haven't had before as most of the ones I love are from previous games. When one wants to leave, I let them unless they're one of my favorites. I don't have a set Dreamies list besides Caroline since that's my name, so I find that this method works out well for me.

I want a town full of wolves so unfortunately I'm limited on the personality types.

So I decided to give myself 2 crankies and 2 snooties since I have to repeat personalities anyway! The only two personalities that wolves don't have are Lazy and Jock, so I'm going to pick two dreamies from another species so I can still have a variety in personality types and also have the majority of the wolves!

tbh even with 2 each for a couple personalities I've seen some repeated dialogue (not a TON to be clear, just a few lines), so tbh I feel like any more than 2 might get a little too repetitive. which is sad for me bc I love soooo many crankies, I could prob fill a whole town with them. I'd also really been wanting to make a wolf island but then I realized I'd have 5 cranky ones... yeah I'm just picking a few faves and going from there lol. (which is still hard enough for me!)

i love so many of the peppy villagers, and as much as i would like to have more peppies than i do right now, i appreciate the villagers more when i have atleast one of each, i've noticed double personality villagers repeating themselves quite often and it does get tiring

i like to talk to the villagers when i see them and i feel less inclined to talk to them if i think they'll just repeat the same thing that a villager with the same personality just said to me 5 minutes ago

i would love to have the peppy dog cookie on my island but i have 2 peppies already, i'd like marshal and pietro in my town too but there's just not enough room for everybody, and would be far too much repeating dialogue!

repeated dialogue is noticeable to me on a daily basis, and i'm looking forward to one of my 2 lazy villagers to move so i can get a cranky villager :D

Man, im such Trash. Didn’t even look at the Sig. *Derp*

also my theme is trippy, psychedelic and galaxy themed with creepy undertones. although uhh i guess to make it sound less convoluted you could just call it surreal lol

So everything bright and crazy. Hmm. Well, I can see that from Pietro and Julian.

What about Ribbot?

What does „with creepy undertones“ mean? Like Alien-like or villagers like Coco and Lucky?

heyy
thanks for all your advice mandogs
while I was away I actually did a bit of a ponder and am considering subbing raddle for ribbot and tia for judy? not entirely sure about this still but if i do decide to go with this I can't wait to literally keel over and die trying to get my hands on judy

@Spunki yeah, I was actually always considering ribbot, I think he looks kinda cool in new horizons, real shiny lol. not a fan of jock but I think it might be nicer than loads of normals
also yeah, pretty much anything that would creep you out.. to a point, I considered villagers like cashmere and freckles but honestly they're more on just the straightup ugly side than the creepy side in my eyes lol

@people-who-like-cranky-or-jock-villagers i just wanted to drop by and say that you don't exist and are invalid

I'm facing this problem right now with my lazies.
I have Sherb, Erik and Zucker is my biggest dreamie so he needs to move in eventually.
I also have 3 crankies at this point though I'm willing to let some go.

This has actually been stressing me out big time so I came to the conclusion that I'll go with villagers I love/like for the time being even if I don't have all the personalities.
If I ever do want a change/get bored of the repeated dialogue... well, I can adopt them out.
I just don't want to let go of a villager and have big regrets a few moments later.

From personal experience villagers I initially didn't care for at all ended up being my dreamies! But forcing a villager you actively dont like and dislike interacting with is no fun! Go with instincts but be open for new possibilities

I have this dilemma as well! I have 3 Cranky villagers (Apollo, Fang, Rolf) and an Amiibo card for another one (Tom the cat)
LOL I'm not sure what to do about this yet...

I prefer to only have 2 of the same personality for reasons already listed. I just can't have too much repetitive dialogue omg.

right now i have 3 normal and soon to have 3 peppy and i can feel myself going insane lol.

i pick dreamies based on personality type tbh. like i pick one from each personality instead of looking at a collective list. i feel like picking them out that way, i can find someone who somewhat fits my aesthetic but will at least have their own dialogue/personality going on.

i rly am not a fan of repeating dialogue. i understand that in an ac game it's unavoidable, but i would like to at least minimize it as much as i can. sure some may not fit the the theme completely, but then again im not going for such a narrow theme (not that that's a bad thing!! ur theme seems to leave little room for wiggling with villagers so that may be why ur conflicted).

i'm planning on waiting to get all my dreamies until closer to the end because i feel like that'll extend the total time i play. i've no doubt that i'm going to get bored eventually, but i'd like to meet new people along the way. i feel like maybe you should wait a bit to get ur dreamies and instead play around with other villagers, like find some of personality types u dont have an see what they're all about. that way, you'd know if u can bare to leave that personality type out, or if u must have it no matter the cost.
