i saw this thread and got really excited until i realized it was about the anime and not the manga... please do all yourselves a favor and read the manga. i started with the anime, and the first few episodes were so good it convinced me to read the manga. but once i did, i realized how much the anime was messing with the plot lines. but i forgave it, since it was really cool to see it animated.
the second season, on the other hand... was a disaster. ishida sui literally apologized for it. i watched it just to see how it went, but after that trainwreck i refuse to watch anything of the anime ever again. please, please read the manga!

Right from episode one, you meet Touka. At first she seems slightly shy, but that is changed by the fact that she completely changes her attitude once it is revealed that she is a ghoul. She brutaly fights Nisiki, and forces Kaneki to eat the human flesh. She seems very poweful, yet furious. She is annoyed that Kaneki spits it out, only to be dragged back by Yoshimura. In the shop, she has a Tsundere personality, which I like. However, once you discover that she goes to school, you find out that she tries harder then anyone else to fit into human society, which I respect. When Hinami's mother is killed, she goes all out to protect her, such as letting her live with her, and killing Kureo Mado to protect her. Her ghoul form is just beautiful. She has a pretty kagune, and her mask is better then anyone elses. Also, when Stupidyama tries to kill Kaneki, she defends him. It is discovered that she knows she isn't the best, but tries hard anyway. She also manages to keep a friendship with a human, and also learns to be able to eat human food, which Kaneki doesn't.

SPOILERS FOR THE NEW CHAPTER, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ IT.
MUTSUKI WAS CONFIRMED AS FEMALE, she is on her period, to confirm she is not trans, she is actually a female, a woman that wants to live as a male for her own choices and decisions, possibly because she is uncomfortable from some traumatic experience... which, sadly a long time ago I used to be able to relate to the reasons of being uncomfortable with your gender, however, it's your choice what you do with that, and I feel like she's in the choosing process.
NEVERTHELESS, I FEEL REALLY HAPPY, mainly because there were some select few people that were very rude to me about this aspect when I assumed she was female, and now that I know Mutsuki is female, body wise at least, I feel accomplished. D:
