Chapter One: The Darkness
It was a peaceful spring day in the Mushroom Kingdom. The sun glinted off the top of Princess Peach's castle. Birds fluttered through the air and chirped their happy melodies. All was calm and normal. Toad lay back on the warm, green grass and watched the clouds changed form above him. He saw one that looked like a mushroom, one that looked like a koopa and another that looked like...what was that? One that looked like Bowser's ship? Toad blinked once, twice. It looked almost too real to him. Then it happened. All went dark.
When Toad woke up he was all alone. All he could see was darkness around him. He shuddered. Toad quickly rose and ran to the castle as fast as his little legs could take him. He stumbled but managed to get back up. He knocked on the door of the castle. No answer. He yelled but nobody was there. Toad opened the door only to see the castle overturned inside. Tables were knocked over and papers were scatterd everywhere. Almost everything was out of place. He had a thought. He rushed up the spiral stairs to Peach's room. If he was right Peach would be gone. He threw open the doors to Peach's room only to see what he had feared most. Peach was gone! "Princess!" he yelled. His mind rushed with several thoughts. Where was Mario? Why all the darkness? Will I ever see the Princess again? He turned around to leave but when he did he heard a crunch under his foot. He bended over to see what he had stepped on. He held in his hands a tattered piece of paper. On it read this note:
Dear Mushroom Kingdom Fool,
King of the Koopas here! I have your beloved Princess. It's up to you to find her...if you dare! And don't even go looking for the red mustached man either. I'll take care of him soon enough! Make it to me and I might give her back.
Bowser, Ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom
Toad felt fury boiling in his heart. Bowser always captured Peach. When would he stop? Toad just got mad thinking about him. Toad knew of only one thing to do. He must find Mario and quick! Toad remembered that Mario was last at Isle Delfino taking a long rest after being saved by Princess Peach on Vibe Island. Toad had to arrange a flight. He dialed his mushroom phone and qiuckly scheduled a flight for the next day. Toad shoved several hundred coins into his bag and laid down in his bed. He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Toad tossed and turned in his bed. He barely had any sleep so far and it seemed like he wasn't going to get any more. He opened his eyes and glanced quickly around the room. Then his heart froze. Standing at the foot of his bed was a horrible black colored Toad! Its eyes shone red with hate and it had claws on its hand. What was this thing? Toad panicked and picked up his bag of coins and swung it at the creature. The creature flew to the ground leaving enough time to run out of the room. Toad was sure he would be able to escape until another one jumped out in front of him. In fact, they were all around him! His only escape was the second story window. Toad had second thoughts as he plunged toward the ground. He braced himself and all went dark.
