Chapter One: The Darkness

It was a peaceful spring day in the Mushroom Kingdom. The sun glinted off the top of Princess Peach's castle. Birds fluttered through the air and chirped their happy melodies. All was calm and normal. Toad lay back on the warm, green grass and watched the clouds changed form above him. He saw one that looked like a mushroom, one that looked like a koopa and another that looked like...what was that? One that looked like Bowser's ship? Toad blinked once, twice. It looked almost too real to him. Then it happened. All went dark.

When Toad woke up he was all alone. All he could see was darkness around him. He shuddered. Toad quickly rose and ran to the castle as fast as his little legs could take him. He stumbled but managed to get back up. He knocked on the door of the castle. No answer. He yelled but nobody was there. Toad opened the door only to see the castle overturned inside. Tables were knocked over and papers were scatterd everywhere. Almost everything was out of place. He had a thought. He rushed up the spiral stairs to Peach's room. If he was right Peach would be gone. He threw open the doors to Peach's room only to see what he had feared most. Peach was gone! "Princess!" he yelled. His mind rushed with several thoughts. Where was Mario? Why all the darkness? Will I ever see the Princess again? He turned around to leave but when he did he heard a crunch under his foot. He bended over to see what he had stepped on. He held in his hands a tattered piece of paper. On it read this note:

Dear Mushroom Kingdom Fool,

King of the Koopas here! I have your beloved Princess. It's up to you to find her...if you dare! And don't even go looking for the red mustached man either. I'll take care of him soon enough! Make it to me and I might give her back.

Bowser, Ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom

Toad felt fury boiling in his heart. Bowser always captured Peach. When would he stop? Toad just got mad thinking about him. Toad knew of only one thing to do. He must find Mario and quick! Toad remembered that Mario was last at Isle Delfino taking a long rest after being saved by Princess Peach on Vibe Island. Toad had to arrange a flight. He dialed his mushroom phone and qiuckly scheduled a flight for the next day. Toad shoved several hundred coins into his bag and laid down in his bed. He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Toad tossed and turned in his bed. He barely had any sleep so far and it seemed like he wasn't going to get any more. He opened his eyes and glanced quickly around the room. Then his heart froze. Standing at the foot of his bed was a horrible black colored Toad! Its eyes shone red with hate and it had claws on its hand. What was this thing? Toad panicked and picked up his bag of coins and swung it at the creature. The creature flew to the ground leaving enough time to run out of the room. Toad was sure he would be able to escape until another one jumped out in front of him. In fact, they were all around him! His only escape was the second story window. Toad had second thoughts as he plunged toward the ground. He braced himself and all went dark.

Chapter Two: The Fate of Mario and Isle Delfino

Toad woke up in a sweat. It had all been a dream. A wave of relief swept over him. However, he couldn't get the image of those horrific looking monsters out of his mind. He checked his mushroom shaped clock. It was 6:02am. His plane to Isle Delfino was to leave in an hour. He grabbed his bag and rushed out of the castle.

He arrived at the airport at 6:55. He quickly gave the koopa ticketmaster his ticket and boarded the small, yellow plane. He sat down by himself and looked out his window. Darkness as far as he could see. The sun should have risen by now. After a nice snack of mushroom muffins, Toad lay back to rest. He hoped he would not have any more nightmares. The rest of the flight was uneventful. Besides Toad there were only a couple of others on the airplane.

It was still dark as they reached Isle Delfino a few hours later. Toad stepped off the plane and surveyed the land around him then looked at his map. Mario was supposed to be staying at Sirena Beach. Toad hopped on a boat and enjoyed the ride to the hotel at Sirena Beach. He had been to Isle Delfino once before when Mario had been framed of plastering graffiti on Delfino Plaza. But Mario had saved the day and cleared his name. Toad hoped he would save the day again. He looked up and saw the massive Hotel Delfino looming on the horizon. It normally would have been gorgeous except for the lack of sunlight. Sirena Beach was supposed to have most magnificent sunrise and sunset in all of the Mushroom kingdom! But now the whole Mushroom Kingdom had an aura of despair hanging over it. They landed at the dock and all the passengers got out. Toad walked up the stairs and to the massive door, the entrance to Hotel Delfino. He slowly opened the room and examined the lobby. A blue Toad was talking to a Blue Pianta with a tree on his head in one corner of the room. In the middle of the lobby were a few shell-like Nokis and two Piantas. Toad took a couple steps into the room when the blue Toad ran to him. "It's about time you got here! Where have you been?" Toad immediatly recognized his friend. "Toadsley, is that you?" The two patted each other on the back when Toad said, "Where's Mario? I need him. Peach has been kidnapped!" "You mean you haven't heard?" "Heard what?" Toadsley took a deep breath and told his story. "You probably know that I was sent to escort Mario to Isle Delfino. We arrived at Isle Delfino early this week and have been staying here. We were staying in our room when everything went dark. I reached for a light but when I turned it on, Mario was gone. I ran out into the hall only to see a cloaked figure run out the door. Get this, he was holding a red cap! I don't know what to do!" Toadsley let out a small sob. Toad tried to comfort him. "It's ok. Um, I gues s I should tell you what happened back at the castle. Bowser kidnapped Peach and now everywhere is dark!" Toadsley had a worried look on his face. "What about all the other Toads?" This was the first time Toad had seriously considered what happened to everyone else. "You know what? I'm not sure. It seemed deserted."

Toad sat down on the floor. "Now that Mario's gone I have no idea what to do! It seems that Bowser has finally won." Toadsley frowned at thim. "We can't let that happen! We have to rescue them but we're gonna need some help! Are you in?"

Chapter 3: Toadsley's Plan

Toad looked at the floor. He had to decide whether he was going to help Toadsley rescue Mario and Peach and find the missing Toads or whether he was going to stay behind and hide like a chicken. After giving it some thought he told Toadsley, "Ok, ok. I'll help you. Now who are we possibly going to get to help us?" Toadsley looked at him and grinned. "None other than Mario's brother of course!" "Luigi? Where is Luigi right now?" "Mario said Luigi was doing something in Boo Woods," Toadsley told him. "If we can get his help then we can stop Bowser!" Toad shook his head. "I don't know about this...Boo Woods is supposed to be really dangerous especially since the darkness." Toadsley grabbed him by the arm and went to find a flight to Boo Woods.

The only flight they could find was to Toad Town which was the closest place to Boo Woods they could find. All was quiet as the Two Toads made their way into the home of the Toads. Toad looked around nervously and gulped. "Why is everything so still?" An owl hooted and the sound echoed through what was now a ghost town. Toadsley turned sharply to the left toward a few bushes. "What is it?" Toad asked. "I could have sworn I saw something move over there. He pointed at the bushes. "Should we check it out?" Toad shrugged. "Why not? Nothing too dangerous could live here." They approached the bush cautiously, careful not to make any noise. All of a sudden something leaped out at them. Toad screamed and Toadsley fell over with the thing on top of him. Toad rushed over and grabbed it and pulled it off of Toadsley. Toad finally recognised what the thing was. It was a yellow Toad. At least it looked like a Toad. It was covered in dirt and leaves and it's eyes had a wild look about them. He grabbed Toad by the shoulders and yelled, "They've been taken away! All of them! I'm the only one left and now they're after me!" The yellow Toad ran off into the woods and let out an unearthly cry. The two Toads looked at each other and shook their heads."What was that?" Neither of them had any idea so thay started off in the direction of Boo Woods. They camped for the night at the edge of the Toad Woods. Toad lay awake looking at the stars and pondering his fate. After they found Luigi what were they going to do? They had to get to Bowser's Castle but how would they know where it was? Neither of the Toads had ever been to or even seen Bowser's Castle. After a while he closed his eyes and was fast asleep.

It was late morning when Toad awoke. Toadsley was already awake and fixing a breakfast of roasted mushrooms. Toad washed his hands and face in a little strem not far away then took a big bite of his breakfast. It wasn't the best food he had ever had but he couldn't complain. They packed up then continued on their journey. At the pace they were going they would reach Boo Woods around early evening. They trudged on through the day. Things were chilly because of no sun shining down on the Mushroom Kingdom. Toad shivered but kept walking.

The two reached Boo Woods as the sun normally would have been setting. The trees stood out as dark sillhouettes against the black evening sky. Toad looked at Toadsley. "Do you have any idea where Luigi is?" Toadsley shook his head and replied, "We better just look anyway. We'll find him. Trust me."

The two toads had been walking in Boo Woods for over an hour. Both of them had become nervous and jumpy at every little thing. They had heard non stop laughing at them since they entered. A twig snapped behind Toad. He spun around but noone was there. He heard something at his side. Toad looked...then it happened!
