Tips to keep your storage clean

I've recently started emptying my storage out of things I'm never using/can't re-order - this also includes clothes.
My inventory was full of so many pairs of shoes/pants and stockings that I was never using and they were all pretty useless as they can't even be worn by villagers so I just sold most of the stuff.

I usually just sell re-orderable items and clothing since most I rarely use. I also somehow only have 300 items/clothing in storage as well as materials

I store only essentials! If you still need more space, drop some items in your house or make a new character.

I ended up making additional houses for storage and because I'd like to make some themed buildings, like a cafe and bug house with all the models, etc.

I recently filled up too.

Why? Because I keep too many craft materials but don't worry I still don't have any stone or regular wood. Ugh. I have like ten stacks of soft wood. I should craft some stuff to sell but nope.

My system is
Sell anything that's easy to craft, keep resource heavy stuff
Sell dupes of clothes, only keep one color if possible.
Give away furniture to villagers

I'd live to say one in one out but a lot of times I don't want to deal with cleaning my inventory at night and I cram it all in my house. I used to just sell it but Timmy and Tommy are grating me with the long text box about selling stuff..

I need to redo this method but I'm not motivated lately lol.

I just made a second character to expand my storage! That's about the only advice I can give, aside from: get rid of duplicate wallpapers/floors/orderable furniture/orderable clothing, and try to keep only a few stacks of each type of resource.

1600 isn't much space at all, but when you think of all the clothing and each (mostly unwearable) bit having an average of eight color variations, and then add up all the bug and fish models, there's your catalogue.

That and some wooden stuff that makes up the limited amount of furniture.

This was a big issue with me too, I was collecting so much furniture and clothes for future room/house updates I couldn't fit anything, I had drastically started placing random clothes in my house (keep in mind my house still only has its first room as of now), then it got worse with my hoarding and just placed them sparingly on the beach where my house is. I had enough and just sold it all. I won't be hoarding furniture for future house upgrades anymore, I'll just take a one-step-at-a-time approach with furniture placement.

Yes I do this too I keep tons of stuff for when I'll want to decorate my house or gift villagers but I never end up using it... I just have a hard time selling it because I'm sure the minute I do so I'll need the exact items I sold haha

I do think I'll end up selling most of the furniture in my inventory, only keeping the non reorderable or the very expensive stuff.

Cannot bring myself to get rid of clothes though...

I have A TON of materials too, and basically 5/10 bags of each flowers seeds/bushes start... Can't get rid of that either 😢

I've been cleaning it out to place items in my house or outside on my island. I'll take a look at an item and seriously ask myself if I'm gonna use it. I try to be realistic instead of clinging to every item.

Ridding the clothes was the toughest for me, I love making themed outfits so not having matching clothes was a no-no for me but i I had no choice. Plus still keeping them on the ground was potentially preventing me from gaining another island star. I too have tons of materials that are nearly useless just stuck in storage (+ my pockets). I'm no longer keeping 'spare' furniture in my pockets, it's a waste of space, I'm either using it or selling it, no in-betweens.

oh; my storage is just—materials only; 1600 / 1600. no furniture, clothing, tools, anything that isn’t wood, iron, clay, star fragments, etc. and i use 3 - 4 stacks each day of different mats with grinding them back after > <

so i mainly use my other player’s poor house for storing all my furniture, unorderables, tools, clothes, and what - not

I needed this thread! Thanks everyone who contributed!

I'm constantly at 1500+ and sometimes I get kinda frustrated, especially by the endless streams of clothes I've amassed over the months. I'm once again about to hit my limit, so, I'll try to take the "real life" approach (in terms of clothing) this time around: Keep what you like to wear... lol
I should also try to get rid of some crafting materials, I have way too many stacks of certain things...

Still don't understand why Nintendo didn't turn the wardrobe into a separate storage space, looking at the sheer amount of clothes that are available for each season... 😐

You don't. You let the hoard consume you. ⚰

Most items clogging my space is trade fodder (furniture and Sahara stuff). I sold items that aren't trade worthy and it helped a lot.

I also made a second character. Basically, I pass items from my main character to my alt so that both have them catalogued, and then my alt sells everything I'm not likely to use or want any time soon. That way, if I decide I do want to get some things back that I've previously sold, I have 10 Nook Shop purchases per day instead of 5.

I still have room, but it's creeping up there. I purged furniture, flooring, rugs, and walls that I can't reorder, with a couple of exceptions. I have a ton of bugs stored right now to sell, since I'm waiting for Flick. I'm also stocking up to be able to get models.

Most of my storage is taken up with clothing. I love the outfits and putting things together. I really should be ruthless about cleaning that out, selling out of season items that can be reordered. That would probably be my one gripe about the game. I love the extra storage, but I liked that secret storage was separate from closets in NL, plus you had the post office. I could keep my current season's clothing in closets and store the rest in secret or letters.

Of course, I probably don't NEED 7 dresses in all the different colors, right?
