Tips To Avoid Getting The "Popular" Villagers Just Because of Their Popularity

I have a lot of popular villagers on my island and I found all of them on mystery islands. I invited them because I thought they were cute and I was happy to make a connection with all of them later.

You could look at a list of villagers and pick out who you think is cute from each personality and then try to find which one to have on your island. That's what I did when Pancetti moved away. I picked out a handful of snooty and uchi villagers who I liked and tried to find one of the ones I chose. (I was just lucky to find Diana who is popular lol.)

If I saw Audie in my campsite one day, you bet I'd have her move in. Not because she's popular, but because like I said before I like wolves and she's a wolf.

This exactly. People shouldn’t assume because you like a popular villager that you are a shallow follower or something. I love the wolves and in every game, I’m hoping for a wolf with a different personality. I got that in Audie, and she happens to be very nice looking and her assumed reason for being named is cool. That all added up to me wanting her before I even knew she was going to be popular. Now, I want Tarou so I can have a jock wolf, and I want to see uchi and lazy wolves.

I love the wolves too! This is part of the reason why I think I fell in love with Audie. I also really like Chief's design. He just looks like some handsome fashion model... Tarou would be cool! Also, after all these years, we STILL don't have a Lazy wolf?

Dobie was, but they changed him. Gotta be honest, he does look super cranky tho haha.

1. Bam- replacing Hamlet as my Jock
2. Reneigh
3. Erik (if I want more lazy babies)/Fauna (if I want more normal sweethearts)
4. Caroline
5. Audie
6. Chief- replacing Bruce as my Cranky
7. Diana
8. Raymond
9. Marshal
10. Sherb

*It'll take a while, but I'll get there eventually*

I only keep villagers if seeing them in my town makes me happy! Nothing to do with popularity. I originally tried to do a "popularville" type thing, but none of them (like Marshall, Marina, etc.) really resonated with me. I say if a villager doesn't make you smile there's probably a different one that will!!

I'm with @mightyenites! I've never played any other AC game, so I have no history with any of these characters. My villagers are a mixture of chance and simply looking at villager lists and deciding visually who I liked most, both individually and as a group. Now I'm trying to find a way to better balance hobby subtypes, but that's proving really difficult!

OT, but how do you like Nana? I just got her and I’m not sure about her.

That said, while I’m not into the popular villagers, it’s because I don’t vibe with them!! I have Marina who I think is pretty popular. The only other I would think might be is Cookie but I don’t know about the popularity. I’d love to have Sherb but it would mean nixing either Nate or Boomer. Since Nate is my fave villager ever and I fell in love with Boomer as one of my first 5, I’m not going to get him but look at him longingly haha. Oh! And Beau because I had him in NL and that was a sweetie!

Popular villagers are popular for a reason. The best part of the game is that you can let them move out at any point if you decide you only got them because they were popular!! And if you got them because they were popular but then fell in love, that’s totally valid! The only thing I’d advise against is keeping the ones you don’t like for their popularity! Don’t put too much worry into it and be sure to have fun!

Most of my villagers are really popular and I honestly don't care what people think lol I chose them because they're the villagers from my two existing NL towns plus the very first town back then that I just deleted so I like them because I spent a lot of time with them not just because they're popular. I used to have both Judy and Raymond out of curiousity and also tried if I would end up liking them the way I liked my NL villagers but nah. In the end, I didn't hesitate to move them out in exchange of my old villagers. I like Audie from the start just because "wolves". Dom is a starter and I don't like a lot of jocks, so that slot is pretty much up in the air. I'm also fond of sheep villagers so that makes him a good candidate for a dreamie.

Nana is a very sweet monkey. I've grown very attached to her. However, Caroline is my dreamie, so I might have to say goodbye to Nana...

You like who you like, it can't really be helped and doesn't really need to be. It's your island, played by you for your own enjoyment, so what should it matter what anyone else thinks about your residents?

My list of favorite villagers spans across all of the different popularity tiers, from the very popular to the bottom tier, and even the ones that are so irrelevant that they don't even factor into any tier. Their popularity or lack thereof plays no part in why I like them. I like their character designs, simple as that.

Regardless, if you want to expand your horizons a bit, something that might help is to really look over all of the villagers. There might be some that you don't know exist that you might discover and decide that you really want to have on your island.

I struggled with this too and asked myself a lot of question to decide which villager I want on my island, because of their theme and their design. But in the end the game happened lol, and you might fall in love with unexpected villagers.
My advice is go with the flow and and love who you want, popular or not, the important is what you feel.
If you want to talk to your villagers a lot, if your happy to see them wandering around your island, if you are sad imagining they could leave... And it's okay to make mistakes too, like wanting a villager so bad and then realizing you don't connect with him, then let him go and hunt for a new one, life goes on !

I did this a lot when I was preparing for the game's release.

Jock- Bam
Uchi- Reneigh ✔
Lazy- Erik ✔, Sherb ✔, and Papi (will only have one or two)
Normal- Caroline and Fauna (will only have one on my town, unless I get rid of Erik, and don't replace him with Papi)
Peppy- Audie ✔
Smug- Marshal and Raymond ✔
Snooty- Diana (I really love Ankha too...)
Cranky- Chief and Fang (will only have one)

Yeah if new villagers were an option Cyd will surely be on the first line for me (and maybe Audie somewhere too).

I actually filled up my island before I knew about the popularity ranking. I knew that Diana and Marshall were popular before New Horizons but that was about the extent of my knowledge.

I thought I liked some of my villagers because they were popular but I really don't feel that attached to them. And it's okay to change who you want in the future and not rush to get there.

Don't look at any 'tier' lists would be my advice.

I didn't even know they were a thing until I'd completed my 10 villagers, and when I did eventually stumble across them I found them interesting if not a little odd.

The fact that Fauna is more widely liked than Midge doesn't affect my enjoyment of either of them, though I do find it interesting to try and figure out why they're ranked the way they are. So far, I've not been able to work it out!

To me, Astrid is awesome, as is Rolf. The fact that they seem to be among the lower ranked villagers doesn't change that.

Heck, the only villager me and my 3-year-old son were happy to let go was Marshal!

I was looking through the list of wolves and was surprised that I had overlooked two specific ones. Vivian and Tarou. It sucks that Tarou was only in one Animal Crossing game, because he looks cute! I wish we'd get a sisterly and lazy wolf as well since most of them are cranky. Don't get me wrong, I do like the cranky villagers.
