I had my town but stopped playing for quite a while it was a cute themed town, I just reset my town and im hoping to make a more zen/nature based town.

What tips if any do you have for starting a new town? thanks :)

Back when I made my town, I had zero experience with actually making the town aesthetically pleasing, so now I'm trying to make the best of it. If I could start over with a new town, I'd pay attention to:

How many beaches there are - 1 or 2.
How many lakes there are.
I'd probably also pay more attention to where new villagers move in and I'd try to block them from making plots where I don't want any houses.
Start collecting the kind of flowers you like early on.
Maybe check out where the rocks are and try to integrate them nicely into the zen environment?
Collect saplings and axes for later as soon as you can.
Quickly befriend Sable for the sewing machine :D

Try to amass your catalog; you will never know if you will use the stuff eventually!
Not doing too much work on the town at once too helps you from getting burnt out.
I know it is tempting if you really want to play, but try to pace yourself and set doable goals!

Oh boi, I have whole freakin guide for this (its not posted yet, I need to add the last 2 sections). Lemme try to give you some short pointers.

Okay SO if you have any other characters besides the mayor, and you choose to keep their catalogues, when you make a character in your new remade town, they WILL have their old catalogue. Be very careful with this, you can actually cycle out their catalogue if you keep erasing them.
•Let's says you currently have 2 characters, your mayor and alt. You decide to make an alt in your new town. They will kept their old catalogue. If you decide "oh I dont like their house placement" and erase them, you will get a brand spanking newbie with no history, no catalogue. So if you want your alt to be developed, don't erase them, think carefully where you put them.

You can have a new name, fave and town name.
Bells left over in your account transfer over.
Sell EVERYTHING unless you have someone keep your non orderables. They do and will show up on your catalogue, but you can't order them. Cause, ya know, non ordersbles.
Clean up the town for more bells profit.
You can assess your town and not erase it I promise you. This way you can see weather cleaning your town has a impact on your end profit.
Go with the weekly installments. You get more money in the end.
PAY OFF YOUR MAYOR'S ENTIRE LOAN. People seem to fight this.
If you can sit on your tree, you have played the right amount of hours to sell.

If you have any other questions or want me to elaborate, feel free to ask. I have experience with it, so that's why I'm makin a guide for it.

Personally, I like to lay out paths soon so that I can guarantee that villagers won’t move on them. I also make sure there aren’t any super inconvenient rocks before I get attached.

Thanks for replying everybody, all of the posts have had super informative and helpful tips looking forward to starting my new town and seeing how it all goes now the first few weeks are going to be super boring haha.

Good luck! Starting a new town can be very slow and draining, just make sure to put your mind to it and i'm sure it'll turn out great :)
Just remember when building permanent public works projects to put them somewhere you won't regret! (coming from someone who has done this many times haha) I wish you the best!! x

Thank you so much! yeah i'm afraid i'll stop playing because it will get draining but i'm sure i can do it! Yesssss i've done that a lot in the past putting public works projects in horrible spots then regretting it hahaha.

In addition to laying out your desired pathways, I would advise covering up the absolute worst places your villagers can move into. It feels like they actively seek out the worst spots in your map, such as right in front of buildings. If you don't plan on plot resetting, then I would consider this basically essential.

you got a lot of nice tips already but it can get overwhelming. i would say the most important thing is the map, your house and the permanent pwps. the rest can always be changed so dont pressure yourself too much :,D
when i start a new town im always really scared to put down pwps or plant bushes and stuff but once you start it gets easier.
good luck~
