This is going to be messy, but bare with me.

Approval Rating
If you feel like grinding approval ratings:
You can get 1 approval point for every 9 flowers you water. So you can water 9 flowers, pick them all up, and them plant them in 9 un-watered spots, and repeat.
Isabelle won't tell you about the approval rating until day 2, but you can still earn approval on the first day.
Refer here for a full breakdown of approval points:

Making Bells
Unless you're using your meow coupons to buy stuff from the campsite, you can sell them at the bank for 3,000 bells a piece. Not bad.
Sell most of your items to Re-tail. They pay more than selling to Nook's shop.
If you don't mind villagers putting Fossils in their homes, sell your duplicates to them on the flea market. The highest they will pay is 4𝑥 – 1. Where 𝑥 = the price Reese will pay. Keep in mind their is a ceiling of about 9000 bells. Villagers will never pay more than that.
If you have a fossil that Reese will pay 2k for, put it on display for 7,999 bells, and then push a villager to the item to get their attention.
Later on though you might want to just farm beetles on the island. If you get good at it, you should make about 400,000 bells in 20-30 minutes.
You should enact the Bell Boom ordinance while you're trying to earn money. Otherwise, I recommend Beautiful Town as this will keep your flowers from withering. It allows you to take breaks from the game without worry, and helps obtain a Perfect status, which is the equivalent to a 5-star town in New Horizons.

Money Rocks!
Dig 2-diagnol holes on a corner of a rock. There is 1 rock per day which will net you 8k bells on normal days, and 16k bells on lucky days. If if you're super lucky, it will net you 8 various gem stones. If a solid object is obstructing you from making a hole, such as a tree, cliff, building, etc. only 1 hole is needed.
P = Player
H = Hole
R = Rock

Villager move-outs
I don't know if you played NH, but unlike New Horizons, villagers will move out on their own. They don't seek permission.
Once you reach a full town, villagers should ping you to tell you they are moving about every 10 days. Villagers will not ping you if you are in what's referred to as "
stranger mode". You enter this state with a villager if you haven't spoken to them in 7 days. So be sure to speak to your villagers at least once a week. You don't want to risk your favorite moving out.
Villagers will also pass rumors to you when someone is planning to move out. If you hear rumors of a villager moving out before the ping, you should go find that rumored villager and see if they ping you or keep an eye on them throughout the day for the next couple days or so.
Once a villager is in boxes, you cannot make them stay. So be careful here.

Shop Upgrades
Shop upgrades and unlocks are based both on time and bells spent/made at respective stores. So you should make an effort to sell stuff some of the time to sell to Nook's shop, and buy furniture you don't need. Also buy clothing you don't need from Able sisters. This will not only upgrade the stores, but unlock others like: Leif, Kicks, Harriet, etc.
Refer here:
https://www.thonky.com/animal-crossing-new-leaf/shop-unlock-guide
This will also increase your catalogue, which is needed to unlock Cyrus. (Req. 100 furniture and 50 clothing)
