If you ever go a long period of time without playing and you're scared of losing your villagers but don't remember the last time you played or don't want to go back months or even years, I have a tip. I have used this myself, and it works. I don't know if this has been shared before, but I figured I would go ahead and post it.

First of all, when you load up your game, create a new character. Do not bother loading up already existing characters, because this will mess everything up and it won't work.

Once your new character enters town, look at the map to see if any houses are gone. If there is a house missing, reset the game. Go to your system settings and change the date back. Load the game up on a new character, and repeat the process until the missing villager's house returns.

If all your villager houses are still there, go to each one that has a villager inside and check if they are in boxes. If no one is in boxes, your safe. No one has moved, and no one is going to move. If someone is in boxes, just reset and change the date on the 3Ds settings back and repeat until they aren't. You can load up your mayor now. :)

This has worked for me. Kabuki and Lolly's houses were both gone, but after setting the system date back a few weeks they were back. Good luck! ^_^

Additional Tip: If you forget what date you last played, and want to know so you can TT to that date (if you TT..) you can go to the 3DS Activity Log to check the date you last played.

Checking the activity log thing sounds like it would be easier if we have been gone for a long time.
Thanks for the great advice, it's handy to know these things :)

There is a better way. If you want to take a break for a while, wait until a villager tells you they are moving then tell them to stay and save and quit immediately. No matter how long you go without playing, when you start again all of your villagers will be there. I just loaded up my game after months of not playing and still have all my dogs.

I always do it this way, even if it's a bit of a hassle, since sometimes my villagers won't ping to ask to move. I've been trying for almost a week on one town and I'm starting to get mad because I really need a break.
