If a villager gives you a time capsule and you forget to bury it, do they just forget about it? Can you open it?
I have one in my pockets that I would feel very guilty opening, but I time traveled and there isn’t an option to bury it now. I need the space in my pockets!
Is it okay to open it?
I know that if a villager moved out they will usually send you a letter telling you to open it, but this villager still lives in my town and they haven’t said anything about it.

Also, if you bury a time capsule and it disappears, I know that the day they request it, it reappears again in the same spot. But if a flower spawns over it, I’m assuming it’s gone forever?

At this point, I think the only thing you can do is open it. But I think time traveling makes villagers forget about time capsules. As for the flowers, of they grow where the time capsule is buried, it will be lost.

I've forgotten to bury time capsules in the past and, like CasualWheezer said, at this point the only thing you can really do with it is open it and free up that slot it's taking up. I believe that time traveling back to the day where you were supposed to bury it won't solve anything if you've already loaded up the town and played on a day after the initial request day because, while it's technically the same date, it's no longer the same "day." Even though it's traveling backward, if you've already played a new day then going back still counts as a new day in and of itself, if that makes sense.

If this happens again in the future and it occurs to you before you load up the town again, be sure to talk to Isabelle and set the date back to the day they requested it, bury it, save and quit, and then make your way back to whatever current day it otherwise would be for you. I often time travel both forward and backward (I take breaks for months sometimes and then go back to the last time & date played) and as long as you go back to that date first, it is still technically the same day and you can run any unfinished errands, purchase anything you wanted at a store that day, etc. since the game regards it as the same exact day.

Time traveling while it’s buried doesn’t do anything since i’ve done that loads before. Later on your villagers will still ping you to dig it up regardless. But maybe if it’s left in your pocket while you travel it will void the message so at that point you can just read it and dispose it. Not sure about flowers spawning on the spot where you buried though. There was one time where I buried a time capsule behind Piper’s house where bamboo shoots spawn regularly, so it was likely at one point the bamboo could have grown over that spot. But then a few weeks later I was still able to dig up to capsule.

My character moved out when I still had his time capsule in my inventory, so I decided to open it then, but it never occurred to me to open it before. I imagine that if they never left, I'd probably be asking this same question right now. 😁 I'm glad that I can bookmark this in case I forget later on.

Flower placement. The time capsule will move to a different spot if there is room.

I forgot about the time capsule and placed a flower next to the police station. When the villager asked for the time capsule I found it behind the police station.

Alright, sounds like I?ll just have to open it and free the space! I was mainly just worried that they?d ask about it later and I?d have to admit that I had opened it, but it sounds like they just forget about it when you time travel. Which isn?t a big deal to me

Unfortunately time traveling can make villagers forget about a lot of things, like requests going over to their house or them coming over to yours. I've had this happen many times when I time traveled backwards before the time they asked for things like this. I think the only request that doesn't change when you time travel is the furniture request, where they ask for some new furniture.

Also, opening things like the time capsule won't have any consequences as far as I know, so go right ahead and open it. I think once I accidentally opened a time capsule by mistake, but the villager didn't really get mad. I never had a flower spawn on the area where I buried it, but like a couple of others have said, it just moves to a different spot. :)

I've been holding a time capsule for my sheep villager Wendy for a long time, and the game won't let me bury it, and Wendy never ever brought it up, yet, I really don't want to open it. Maybe it's about time I just open it to get rid of it and free a mail space.

Yeah, I actually realized they forget about visit requests when you time travel! Usually they would come to me angry saying that they were waiting for me, but when I time travel they never bring it up or even mention that I missed a planned visit!

I?ve had one in my pockets for way too long as well.. like 6 months, never really thought about what to do with it until I started needing the mail space because I was ordering lots of items from Nooklings! But I guess no harm done if we are opening it now :)

I had one disappear once because too many flowers and items were dropped in the area it was buried. However, once I moved a few things then chose Save & Quit and went back, the buried capsule finally showed up.

I had a similar situation and my villager just forget it that I even had it. It's the same with things you should return to another villager, they forget about it that they even ask you to return it, so if you open it nothing big happens.

I just dug up a time capsule from a villager who was in boxes yesterday, and obviously gone now. Strange that they even allow that to happen, I assumed any requests from moving villagers would be null and void.

Her real move out date was the 28th I believe, but I was TTing microly and I think the going backwards rushed her into boxes. Could that be why the time capsule still happened? o.O
