Back in Wild World, it was possible that you can get a town, which has a river that split up the
town map into 3 parts.

As examples:

Unfortunately, New Leaf doesn't have such towns anymore and I'm kinda disappointed about that,
as I really like them back then.

What about you? Do you miss such towns in New Leaf? Or are you happy with the towns the game
has to offer?

I never thought about it before, but now that you mention it, it'd be nice to have 3 sections!

Now that you mention it... I wouldn't really mind having a river split in my town. It could make for a nice little park area!

It'd be nice to see them return in the next game. I loved them in WW and I bet they would be even more fun now that we can landscape more. There's so much you could do with a smaller 3rd island! I feel like they should make the towns bigger if they did that though. There wouldn't be room for anything else if they kept the towns the same size that they are in NL.

I loved the islands you could get in GCN, WW, and CF. There was also more variety in how your town was made. For example, you had two layers in your town in GCN and CF, which led to some interesting possibilities, especially in CF. You could even get a three layer in GCN, although it was rare.

New Leaf seems to lack the great things that made town layouts great in the previous games, even compared to WW. The beach isn't as easily accessible either. All the town layouts feel the same to me. The only unique thing in New Leaf towns I can think of are the three part beaches, and the smallest part would be a mini island you can't access unless you have a wetsuit.

Those are really cool, but I miss the hills from the original the most! I don't know how that would work with the way they changed the camera, but I miss that the maps were a little more unique back in the day.

Yeah, I liked this feature a lot - especially awesome if you could get your house on the island! I also miss the three level towns you could get in the Gamecube version.

i loved my island in CF. it was big enough for my character (i started typing mayor out of habit, ha) and one other villager so it was really peaceful :3 if the next game will be on the switch then the towns will be bigger than in NL, i assume, so hopefully the island and two part towns will return in the next game :)

Hopefully if there comes to be a animal crossing for the switch we'll have a ton of map options and opportunities including both multiple elevations and multiple parts/islands plus more. I'm assuming there's got to be some huge options and customization given the switch's game file size capacity :0

These were cool! It'd be fun to have more variety between town layouts for a Switch game.

i don't necessarily miss three part towns but i do miss the layouts from city folk where the beach was actually connected to the rest of the town. the cliff separating the beach from everything else makes it feel like a dead space that's only really good for flower breeding and planting a few trees to make it look a bit less sad.
i loved how you could have villagers living right by the beach in city folk, i remember that my best friend peaches lived just a few spaces away from the shore and when i got coconuts i planted them close to her house so the area around it would be a bit nicer.

to be honest i really think the maps in new leaf are boring and not unique enough. or, like, they are unique but it's still very limited imo, mostly because of the cliff and side beach. i guess it can be great that the entire town is flat and that there isn't a cliff separating the north side from the south side anymore but the maps are really boring and basic, when you've had a few different layouts the maps start feeling very similar to each other ):

i hope that the maps in future games will have more options. idk exactly what i would like but i don't want everything to be the same...

I don't think I ever had a map like that, but they do look interesting. I agree with some of the other posts that having the upper and lower level and the connected beach look cool. It would be neat if they made a game where you could customize the map instead of just getting only random ones. It would be fun to add a river and waterfalls where ever I wanted.
