the design is a knock off, yes. but it's an improvement in the tracking of the device.
the reason this is so, is because it has a camera to do this, instead of relying solely on motion sensors, like the wiimote does.
the control design of the wii, if i remember, is basically two conductors that are very, very close. when motion is applied, they touch, and motion is sensed.
the move relies on the camera, instead of sensors, to track that big neon ball, which is the color it is to be discernible to the camera. the camera can tell how close or far away the ball is, and from there, track motion. I think it also has a pointer, which again, relies on the eye (similar to the IR sensor bar the wii uses)
and, there might be some motion sensors in the remote, too, i'm not sure.
it isn't a knock-off directly/by design, but it is a knock-off in concept.
