So with the Dream Suite now officially coming in two days, I've started working on building my island up more. My island is a somber story-based island that relies heavily on forest and subtle horror themes. I say subtle since I'm not going for a in-your-face blood everywhere kind of thing. However while I was terraforming my island I realized that... my current permanent villagers really do not match my vibe at all.

For context my permanent villagers are:
Couteau, Goldie, Pietro, Claudia, Leopold.

Pietro gets away with being on my island as I have a circus section and I can somewhat justify Claudia (if I gave her a black dress?) and Leopold (sort of forest colored).

.. but how on earth can I even pretend Cousteau and Goldie match my theme? ... and yet I cannot see myself parting with any of these animals as I've grown attached to them and they make me happy.

While I want to have a neat story island I also don't want to make my island in to a place that I don't enjoy for my daily play.

So I guess my question is:

If you were to go to a themed island, would it take you out of the experience to have villagers roaming about that do not at all match the vibe?

For example you go to a pastel island and none of the villagers are pastel despite everything else being pink... or you go to a somber horror island and you see bright pink and yellow animals around. How would that make you feel?

I never used the Dream Suite in NL and thought it was kinda pointless, so I personally don't care about theming and all of that. It's your island, so why sacrifice your own happiness to impress random internet strangers? It's unlikely many people will even see your town unless you have a big online presence anyway (which doesn't apply to 99% of normal people). Your choice of villagers are part of what makes your island unique, so keep the ones that let you enjoy the game. People care too much about cultivating a certain aesthetic imo.

Well, I’m trying to match my villagers to a central theme (woodland as well-but not horror based). While I am trying to fit into the overall woodland theme a lot of the villagers I’m going to have are already dreamies that I couldn’t really fit into my shared island so it all works out. The only one who might not entirely mesh is Sterling but since he’s an eagle I still think he can fit in.

To answer your question- no not at all! You could always come up with a creative story as to why certain villagers are in your town, or just simply say they are your favorites, I wouldn't really think anything of it.

You know what. You're right.

I never really cared about having a famous island, I just always thought it would be neat to make a story based island since it seemed fun. I guess the idea that you somewhat had to have matching villagers stems from those few popular towns I did see.

Really though. If I'm not trying to impress others then who else is there left to impress but myself.

I think I'll stick with proudly having a bright neon pink tiger on my island. If it ends up bothering the 3 people who do see my island then tough luck.

I really don't mind for the most part. Maybe a little bit when I go to a city-themed island and see them walking around, but nevertheless, it's their choice. As long as they're happy then all is well.

I have a fairy forest themed island with mostly woodland creatures like bunnies, cubs, and deer. But I also love Melba the koala and Pashmina the goat, so they live here even though they don't 100% fit the theme.
Oh yeah speaking of animals that don’t entirely fit in the only sisterly villager I want is Frita. I handwave it because of wild sheep but some people might think the foodie theme doesn’t mesh with the quaint forest design. I don’t care about that; she’s my absolute favorite sisterly villager.

Not really. I like what I like if they match my theme cool if not cool. I love all my villagers no matter what. (Except Tia..she's..eh..)

Haha I agree with all this. I hardly ever used the dream suit and I probably won't use it now unless we get creepy pasta islands..but to be perfectly honest i'm not really into impressing people I just want my domain to make me happy. If the villagers fit my theme okay if not okay. I'll love them no matter what.

hope I don't misunderstood your post but I feel like with subtle horror you can craft a creepy story around every villager and go with it?
I mean cousteau could be secretly cooking frogs legs in his back yard lol

cute & pink villagers in horror towns are great if they have some sort of dark secret that you can uncover
maybe it's because I watched too much mirai nikki but I love cute yandere-ish characters

I agree with Absol, most pink villagers can look kinda creepy too. Don’t a lot of people think Judy is super creepy because of her eyes?

What if you put pink dollies around in a creepy way in your town?

i don't mind the villagers not matching. at times it's a mission and half to get everything synced up in the game. i would absolutely love to visit!

Honestly, no. However I would notice if they villagers are carefully picked with the theme (Coco + Lucky on a horror island)
this is exactly how I feel! when the villagers are picked to go with the theme I definitely notice it and think "hey, that's cool", but when they're not it doesn't even cross my mind.

it's like how people never notice a movie's sound design unless it's really bad, but the opposite 😂

I am so Impressed when people have a vision and a theme. I have neither so can’t wait for the dream suite 😍

I don't think that it does matter too terribly! I pay more attention to the island decor and the landscaping / items outside and never really feel jarred from whatever experience those things themselves are attempting to create when I see villagers that don't correspond.

I like the dream suite because I love seeing the personal touch people leave on their islands, we're all given the same exact tools yet every island is different in so many beautiful ways

My island is not themed...
But I think that for those who do, the villagers add a lot of weight, especially with the lack of different furniture in game.
To answer your question, yes, it would feel like something is missing
Pietro, Coco, Lucky and Cherry would look cool in a spooky island
