Generally I just use an item I can customize to their preference. Most of my villagers loved the wooden wall clock in their preferred color.

Where: Lily was outside, Coco was in her house
Gifts: Wrapped foreign fruit for both of them

Where: Cherry and Apollo were inside their houses. The rest were inside.
Gifts: Wrapped foreign fruit for Bones and Marshal. The other 7 were given wrapped Iron Wall lamps. Reason for the iron wall lamps - They don't hang them in their room, and it's an expensive piece of furniture to sell for the nooklings, which gives bonus gift points.

Edit: Marshal gave me his inside his house, while Judy gave it to me in Nook's Cranny which is kind of funny.

I've gotten Audie, Julian and Punchy.
I've given them all wrapped Iron wall lamps. I remember reading somewhere that to get the pictures you need a certain amount of friendship, so by giving them a furniture item worth 2500 bells or more you would get 5 points, so eventually after a lot of presents I got their photos, I hope to get more!

I didn't know about the Iron Wall Lamp trick, I'll have to try that to speed things up!

Just need Ed's, Kabuki's, Tangy's and Bill's before I can give them the boot.

I've got all of mine except Filbert (who only moved in a few days ago so I'll let him off) and Wendy (who has been here since the game started but she's sooo stubborn)

So thats: Ursula, Gaston, Dom, Pate, Nan, Chevre, Poppy, Fauna, Bob (some are on the other wall- some posters I bought from others just to get a bit of variety)

Most of them have been given outside, in exchange for the daily gift. I usually give them hanging terrarium, shell lamp or shell speaker, which are the most economic gifts I can give (cheapest to craft but highest selling price. If you give them a furniture gift that would usually sell for 2500+ bells, they are guaranteed to give you an item in return.)

I don't remember exactly how I got all of them or the order I got them in but I'll write the deetz for the ones I do remember:

Filbert: He was in his house and had asked for a bug and I gave him a long locust.

Pietro: I only remember I gave him a gift, not sure what/where.

Apple: I gifted her some pink bunny ears outside (lol)

Willow: I gave her a gift, can't remember anything else

Maple: See above

Rolf: I gifted him the blue wizard's robe in his house
