yesterday I started trying to plan out the layout of all the paths on my island and discovered that I absolutely Hate the 90 degree corners of the in game paths. so today I started looking into getting The Path as it has a much more rustic natural cottagecore kinda vibe but now my question is this: how does everyone manage to use custom designs for paths without running out of design slots??? what are some of the ways you guys have utilised your designs so you use up the smallest amount of slots while still balancing covering all of the elements you need for decorating your island?? what one tile decorations do you use in addition to the base 9 part path design?? I am in desperate need of tips and help as this is the first time I've tried to make "natural" looking paths and am open to any sort of feedback haha :) thank you in advance!!

Sadly you have to be picky with slots because of this. Ugh how I wish they would add more design slots 😭

i actually just downloaded the path a few minutes ago and am now laying it down. i basically gave up on conserving design slots: 27 of my slots are currently dedicated to paths (i use two; 15 of them are Path slots). the base 9 is really the minimum for the path, i don't think you can go lower than that. i have another 5 slots for one tile wide paths, and if i had any more to spare i would add some of the little single dirt patches.

honestly 9 slots isn't bad for a path (most are 12) and it looks amazing as-is, so you don't really need more than that if you're trying to save space.

I have “the”path and a rock path and I usually have a few clear ones that go over in game paths. The rest I try out and see if it’s worth keeping or not. I don’t see a problem with using something that takes a lot of space if I plan to use it a lot. The other spots are for random things that I like, but those are temporary because I can easily switch them out for something else later on.

This is the best advice I've seen on how to use your design slots. It's from youtuber Lauren Plays. I recommend watching her video (link) for a better understanding, but here's the basic idea. (the video is under 10 minutes and is talking about restarting her island)

These are, of course, just suggestions. You do you. :) However, it's really helped me manage my design slots in a deliberate way.

2 rows - main path (like "the path", or maybe those cute borders, whatever)
1 row - secondary path
1 row - ground fillers
1 row - rugs/blankets/stalls/simple panels
next rows more adjustable for your theme
2-3 rows - theme specific (woodsy, beach fillers, etc.)
2 rows - save for other things you’ll find you want (maybe more one time uses)

i have 11 slots dedicated to my path. the rest are filled up by other things and i wish so badly we had more slots because i have to be really picky with the designs i decide to keep

magic hocus pocus.

seriously, though? i have no idea. i've basically given up on having any custom design slots for anything besides my paths - the flag design i made for my island was overtaken a while ago by my stone path edges, but at least the flag is still what it had been (so that's good to know. that you can set a flag design and then overwrite that design without messing up your flag). essentially, i've just figured out that i want more of my custom designs to be on my island ground, because a lot of the items can take up space otherwise. and because i really like the stone paths in the game, i wanted to add something to them to make them look a little more fancy.

in the beginning i was only going to dedicate just enough custom slots to 'the path' as i needed, and then maybe do some other things, but i gave up when i saw how bland the in-game paths looked without an accent of some kind.

tl;dr it's worth it if you get the look you desire. filling in 1x1 spaces with little things like cobble stones, wooden stumps, fallen leaves or flower petals (which could be a seasonal thing, if you find them and swap them out to go with your weather) are really good ways to spruce your area up. it's easiest to decide the general theme of what you want on your island, and then start looking up custom designs afterward. there's a lot of really well done stone walkways that you could take a few slots out of for accents, or wooden paths, etc.

If I think I'll get multiple uses out of a design, I'll use it. I ditched anything that served only one purpose; for example, a sign reading "Honey."

It helps that you can replace flags and face paint while preserving the design on your flag/face.

sadly ive really had to cut down, i don't really have any custom designs dedicated to custom furniture/in my house to make room for it
i really wish there were more slots!

I definitely think we’re lucky with the amount of slots we have compared to new leaf but I would like more. I use leaves and mushroom patterns and the ones that look like puddles bc I think they’re really cute. My layout Calls for a lot of forest space though so the Path really helps because I can spread it out and fill up but it still looks natural

yes I agree!! 9 really isn't too bad for one path, I'm just struggling with trying to decide if I want to use another full path for my town area (dirt doesn't feel 100% appropriate) or if I want to get something smaller and mix it up with the decorations around the edges etc

yes I actually really appreciate how easy it is to switch out full paths if you decide to change it up!!

This is so useful, thank you. I just subscribed to Lauren Plays.

I love how we as a community are already running into the problem of design slot space.
Do we remember when it ws just 10 slots for EVERYTHING? Clothes and paths?

Some things never change.
