PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) ? If you missed April?s total eclipse of the moon, now?s your chance. But you?ll need to get up early.
Wednesday morning, if the skies are clear, North Americans will have prime viewing of a full lunar eclipse, especially in the West. The full moon will be obscured by Earth?s shadow in the predawn hours. The total eclipse will last an hour, starting at 3:27 a.m. with the point of the greatest eclipse occurring at 3:55 a.m.
It also will be visible across Australia and much of Asia. Only Europe, Africa and the eastern tip of Brazil won?t get the show.
The moon will appear orange or red, the result of sunlight scattering off Earth?s atmosphere. That?s why it?s called a blood moon.
Weather permitting, a free viewing of the eclipse will begin at 1 am at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada with the Rose City Astronomers. The Oregon Parks and Recreations will have telescopes set up for attendees to use. OMSI Space Science Director Jim Todd will also be present to give informal talks about the lunar eclipse and the autumn night sky.
Just 15 days after the sun, moon and Earth align on Wednesday, they will do so again. On Oct. 23, the moon will pass in front of the sun, bringing a partial eclipse to the Pacific Northwest.
And the THE MOON MIGHT TURN REDDD
For the second time this year, people in San Diego County will be able to observe the moon go into total eclipse. The lunar surface may appear to turn red when it happens.
The latest eclipse will begin at 1:17 a.m. on Wednesday when Earth's shadow begins to subtly shade the moon. Look to the west-southwest. Earth's only natural satellite enters distinct partial eclipse at 2:18 a.m., followed by total eclipse, which starts at 3:37 a.m. and ends at 4:22 a.m. The moon will then begin to move out of eclipse. Everything will be over by 6:32 a.m.
The National Weather Service says that the marine layer might block or obscure the eclipse at the coast and in the western valleys.
