The "I learned something new today!" Thread

Pablo Fanque was the first Black circus owner. He lived in the Victorian England, during the “golden age” of circuses. He started out as an equestrian performer and rope-dancer, but later owned a circus— which ran for 30 years.

Nowadays, he is best known through the Beatles song, “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”

Loons cannot walk on land. Their body isn't built for it to be able to walk. Their legs are towards the back of the body so they can only do hop flop like maneuver when on land. They spend almost their entire lives on the water.

Here is a picture if you don't know what a loon is. I always liked them but thought they were similar to a duck, but I guess not really. They also make awesome sounds, which I already knew.

Loons are a Canadian icon hehehe, I love the sound of their call so much. I hope to hear it in person someday 🥺💜

During the 1950s, some “concerned” parents wrote the FBI asking them to investigate Elvis. They felt his public persona and dance moves were inappropriate. Now, I know he was provocative for the time…but come on! Did they really think the FBI was gonna waste their time on a singer swinging his hips around?! 😂

Some people think Dragon's (from Shrek) name is Elizabeth because of when Donkey yelled, "I'm coming, Elizabeth!" before passing out. However, it's actually (and I caught the reference) a catchphrase in Sanford and Son.

Howard Finkel thought of the name “WrestleMania.” It was originally going to be called “The Colossal Tussle.”

this was actually yesterday, but I learned that in Super Mario 64, Mario does not take damage from bumping into a Koopa. he just gets knocked back a little. I was always cautious trying to hit koopas to get their blue coin in this game because I didn't want to take damage. and how can you blame me? every other enemy in the game (besides the tiny goombas) deals damage. I guess the Koopa is a wimp in this game lol.

recent studies have shown that grapefruit may help reduce heart disease risks but it can also affect medication so certain medicine will tell you not to take with grapefruit. you can read more about the study on the NIH website.

The voice actress that played as Trixie Tang in The Fairly Odd Parents is blind. She read her lines for the show in braille.
Yes, I remember reading this! Dionne also voiced Kimi in Rugrats. Hard to believe she’s in her 40s now.

I learned a few interesting facts about starfish!
  • Starfish is not a fish and it’s a group of marine invertebrates which include the sea cucumber, sea urchin and sand dollar!
  • Starfish don’t have a brain, or blood. They use filtered sea water to pump nutrients through their nervous system instead.
  • They can regenerate!

I just learned that Stephen Root (Bill Dauterive in King of the Hill) voiced Bubbles in Finding Nemo. It’s crazy how many times I’ve watched that movie and not recognized his voice. 😂

I learned that Mormons really like The Princess Bride. I mean, a lot of people do, but it’s popular with them. I guess because it’s clean and focuses on marriage and true love?
