I've been stressing over how and where to put my villagers houses at because I'm not sure what is a decent enough yard size. Previously, I had placed all these houses in a specific order, sort of like a neighborhood, but the yard size was small. There was two blocks of space between the front of the house and three blocks of space on the left or right of the house with a fence surrounding it. But that makes their yard look crowded when I put stuff inside. I've seen people have large rivers, large yard space for villagers, and somehow they made it work out. Here I am struggling with what I want to do. I sort of have something in mind, but even using the Island Planner or whatever isn't really helping me at this point. It's gotten to the point where I don't even want to bother with this game.

My brother is over here trying to make a secret garden that takes up a lot of space and I've told him to wait and try to help me figure out where to put the houses, but he just thinks we should throw them wherever. I'd like to have some kind of neighborhood with four houses in one place and four in another, and the last two wherever. I'd like to start over, but I don't want to have to obtain everything all over again. Does anybody know the ideal space for a yard next to the house?

I do wish the island was a biiit bigger sometimes. I do feel limited by the restrictions. I also wish we could move absolutely everything on our islands but that's neither here nor there.

I have issues because I want my map to look aesthetically appealing and I also am a big control freak when it comes to things ahahaha.
I'm also nervous about how big future buildings are going to be because of the limited space. I have empty space on my island and yet I still feel like I'm going to have to move things around to accommodate everything.

You are right to pay attention to lot size before you get started. Like you, I have split my neighborhoods into two. One has four lots. The other five. My lots range in width from 5 to 9 blocks. I suggest at least seven blocks with five blocks deep. By making at least five blocks deep, you will be able to walk all the way around the house. I find this is handy for navigating around the island and not getting stuck. I suggest going with more room, because it’s so much fun to personalize each of the lots. I think it’s worth the space.

Do you have big yards for your houses? I saw a 3D image of someone's island. They took 500 pictures and somehow pieced them together to show a full 3D model of it. I don't know how they did that, though. I saw their island and they take a lot of space with their houses and I looked at it and thought, "How did they do that?" I'm not bothered by where my Town Hall is. I just get frustrated decorating a part of the island and then looking at the map only to realize it somehow took up a lot of space.

When you say 5 to 9 blocks of width space, does that include the house or exclude the house?

Includes the house.

No I don't actually! I see people who have them set up so well and am so envious of that but I noticed it does take a lot of room to do that so I pretty much have my islander's set up on star shaped cliffs and I decorate around that. I completely understand what you mean though, it's just so small when you have certain ideas to do something and can really end up limiting what you'd actually want to do with your island.

I've been doing 10 wide by 8 long and I've been really happy with that amount of space. If I ever finish everything (which is still a ways off), I'll try to post my map and photos of all the yards. My houses are spread out all around the island, though I have a few pairs of two. Bluebear and Audie are neighbors in the photos here. Raymond's yard is a little wider than 10 just because he happens to be next to the river.

I don't know that there's any data on this, but I noticed sometimes villagers hang out in front of their house, so if you put stuff in their front yard for them to use, they seem more likely to use it. Before this I had given a villager a side yard that she rarely used.

If we had a map the size of Animal Crossing on the GameCube, I'd probably feel a bit more content. You could have 15 animal villagers living in your town in that game. Maybe I'm just overthinking. I don't know. I'm going to keep trying, of course. It's just really frustrating to me.

Alright. Thanks. Maybe I should start there.

Oh wow! That's a lot of space. And you have room for stuff like cafés, parks, and whatnot? I wouldn't look to use this amount of space, but wow!

Thank to those who helped me out. I really do appreciate it. I'm feeling a bit better about my island situation.

Yes - my map is a work-in-progress (not every house is in the right spot yet), but there are still open areas left over I can use for other stuff.

Geez! Maybe I really am just overthinking things. Thank you and everybody else helping me here. You have no idea how much of a relief this is. Maybe you do, I don't know. Still, thanks.

I never had to deal with decorating my island with another person. I think the main thing is that you both need to find way to compromise when one's project gets too big or need to move over a few spaces. Another option to make some of the villagers have beach houses to get more room. Or you can move the shops to the beach.

I know some people like having their villagers have the same size yard but I like might to be a little different so they are not so cookie cutter. The limited space makes it interesting. I'm honestly too lazy to pull these images off my twitter but Flora's and Phil's houses are part of my board walk area so it feels roomier even though the space I call their "yard" is smaller.

do you and your brother share an island? I agree there not really enough space on the island. It's really tricky to give each villager their personal space and for it to look like a neighborhood. Vice versa, if you put them too close it seems cluttered. I wish I could give more advice but my villager are in really close quarter of one another. It seems like a commune at time.

Hope you find your answer :)

He wants to make a secret garden of some kind, which I'm not against. I just feel like the best approach for now would be to place houses and buildings in certain locations and then do all the other stuff afterwards. I've moved all but two houses down onto the beach and the buildings all down near that area as well so everything is out of the way for now. And I agree with you on not having yards that look cookie cutter. I had cookie cutter looking yards earlier, but I saw other islands on YouTube and wanted to go a different direction. I still want neighborhoods, but not all 10 houses within the same zone. I feel like doing that is sort of monotonous. I do appreciate your help. Thank you.

I share with my parents, so I always feel a bit cramped with what I can do. I admit my neighborhood looks awful (I go economy class with room) but my mom and dad love it cuz they can maneuver around the island and locate villagers easily.

whenever i look at those 5 star island tours on yt I'm like: 'how' how do they have the space - or i'm just v uncreative and unorganized with my space that i barely have any room for 4 more villagers

We share an island. It's difficult trying to collaborate with him. I tried to put houses next door to one another early on. I've even used the Island Planner to see how that would look before committing to anything. It looked nice, but I felt like I could be giving them more space, I'm just not sure how. I've seen some yards posted by some of the users on this site, so I'm hoping I can get an idea of how big I want my villagers yards to be.

I don't think I've even looked at my map in like two months. I turned off the auto showup function and never looked back. I can imagine wanting your island to look good for you to explore in and play the game, but worrying about how it looks on the map is beyond me...

Yup. I've seen really amazing looking islands on YouTube, too. It really shouldn't be, but it does feel overwhelming sometimes. Sometimes I wish I could visit these islands and just experience them myself.

What I mean about worrying how it looks on the map is that I'll look at it and see where I've put down tiles and realize just how much space I've used on the island. I want to have enough space to walk around and not feel like everything is squeezed together.
