Does anyone know the best time to go hunting for them? I'm curious. I never caught them before, not even in City Folk. I heard they were difficult to catch.

You can catch them from 7PM to 4AM, but the best time to catch one is from 11PM.

At the moment, you can only catch tarentulas, and from July you'll be able to find scorpions. :)

Yeah, I'm not going to contribute too much because everything is already said I was playing at midnight one time and I heard strange music pop up and I saw a tarantula. Too bad I didn't catch it, I was too scared and confused.

I used to catch Tarantulas all the time in City folk, but I have only seen them twice in all my time playing new leaf, both on the same day at around 7:30. One ran away while I was getting my net, the other bit me. I haven't seen one since :(

Tarantulas can be caught during all the summer months (June—August), and scorpions start to come out a month later (July—September).

It's really tempting to finally go for that tarantula since it's the start of the summer, but it's going to be really hard in June. Reason being is that there's a limit for the amount of bugs that can be spawned on the map at a time, and a lot of those slots are going to be taken up by fireflies (which are EVERYWHERE at night in June), making your chances of finding a tarantula harder and more annoying. Luckily fireflies are gone in July and the scorpion is also available to catch, so you have a better chance of finding either one.

As far as spawn times go, the window of opportunity for both is 7pm—4am. Tarantulas are easier to spot around 7pm since it's lighter out than the rest of the night, but their peak time is from 11pm—2am.

Scorpions are easier to catch since you can see their tail when they're facing away from you, but tarantulas are a nightmare imo. The other day I was bound determined to finally catch one of those hairy abominations and it took about 5 hours, and failed catches until I finally got it. I believe my time was set to 1am when I caught it. Since they're so rare whenever I saw a black splotch crawling on the ground I'd literally get heart palpitations and try to remember what to do to catch it, and as I finally collect myself enough to go for it the tarantula already scuttled away. But this was in June so I think next month you'll have a much better chance of finding them.

You'll know when you're near one if you hear a scuttling, wind toy noise (kind of like your footsteps in the grass but faster).

Do not walk around with a net, either another tool or nothing at all. When you see a Tarantula/scorpion. Stop and walk South, but keep the Tarantula/Scorpion in screen. When your far enough, switch to the net and hold A. And slowly follow the insect. Make sure you are behind them (apparently they can't see you behind them). Once you get close, release the net and caught. Also, walk slow like your catching a Golden Stag on the Island.

I cannot catch a tarantula no matter how hard I try. If I had a dollar for every time I got bit by one I'd be rich. But I seem to find them around 10-11pm.

I caught my very first tarantula yesterday night!(: It was so unexpected and I slowly crept towards it with my net before it got away or chased me. It was around midnight so as others have previously said, after 7 pm is when they come out crawling hehe Hope you catch one!!(:

I encounter tarantulas a lot. Usually I'm too scared to grab my net but every time I see one I go over to it and walk all over it or I chase it into a pond/river.

I tend to find them around midnight. I find it better to wait until you see one to pull out the net or else they just attack. Beware of them jumping. I had one jump over part of the ramp leading to the upper part of town. I thought I was safe. My brother also had one jump over part of one of the small ponds and attack him.
