When you lurk for a villager, you'll get a VM or PM from me, notifying you that said villager is in boxes. So yes, you get a heads up before everyone else. You'd have 3 hours to respond to that notification before the villager is available to the public, which means at that point, anyone could claim it. These terms vary throughout different cycling threads.

So simply put, lurking isn't like reserving, so it's not guaranteed to be yours (especially if there's multiple lurkers for one villager), you'll just get early notice. Hope that helps
