So i'm going to be getting a replacement 3ds xl (not the new one, just a special edition old model) at one point once i scrap enough money together but i plan on trading in my current XL at gamestop to go towards my purchase. How would i go about transferring my stuff (game downloads are my biggest concern, i have acnl and smash) to my new system when I won't have my current system on hand? I plan on using my computer at home.

A few questions:

Am i able to transfer without my current system on hand?
Am i able to use the same sd card? (Whiped clean)
Will my FC transfer too?

Any advice is appreciated but serious answers only please.

Your FC will remain the same. You cannot perform a system transfer remotely, only Nintendo can perform this operation.
The old SD card must remain in the transferring console for the data to be sent over to the SD in the new console. The SD data is basically copied over.
System transfer copies over preinstalled application data so will include activity log and friend list.
Game downloads on SD will be sent over. :-) if the nnid is thereafter linked, they can be downloaded if lost for free from your account.

1. No, you need both systems.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.

I recently transferred my 3DS to my N3DS XL. Took less than 20 minutes to do.

Reformatting the microSD card to FAT32 so the N3DS XL could read it, however, took over an hour.

I had a similar issue when my old 3DS was stolen and I got a replacement one before I got the new 3DS. You will have to have the old system and your new system at the same time to be able to do it without needing to call Nintendo. If you want to keep all of your old game data, just keep the SD card with data on it and transfer it to the other 3DS. Otherwise, if you wipe it clean, well you have to start all your saved data all over again. As for your FCs, sadly you'd be getting a new one if you have to call Nintendo and have them do the transfer.

Long answer short:
Yes, but through Nintendo support
Yes, but if you wipe it clean all your saved data is gone for your DLCs
Yes, ONLY if to the true transfer with both systems present

Edit: Sadly, just moving the SD card doesn't work like you'd think cause some where Nintendo puts a "key" on the SD card that only connects to the "lock" of the 3DS

The old consoles SD must remain in the old console whilst performing a system transfer. Not wiped before hand.
The newer consoles SD can be wiped and reused if there is actually anything on it.
After you can reuse the old SD.
Sorrywasnt sure what the title question was meaning

So even using my computer and copying the contents of the sd card over will not work?

A system transfer must be used to copy over the downloaded games as they are 'tied to the console's. Simply copying over SD data will not copy over games.
A system transfer Is best.

Okay thank you for clearing that up. It's not a huge loss then since i don't really play smash and the ac copy is just my cycle town.

Glad you got help lol. I guess I did mine way before they started these special things lol

I took out my SD card and did a transfer from my old 3DS to my N3DSXL.
Worked fine. Afterwards I then put my SD card into my laptop (had an SD Card reader), copied it to the desktop, reformatted my new 64GB Micro SD card (N3DSXL only uses Micro SD's), then copy/pasted the folder from the desktop to the new Micro SD card. I then put that into my N3DSXL...haven't had a problem.

Letting the System Transfer Utility copy over your SD Card contents as well will cause it to take MUCH longer to complete the process.

Im sure that would work too :-)
I would just do the complete transfer saves copying over GBs worth of large games like smash
