Swelling villagers

I don't get how someone can sell you s villager. How can you be sure that the villager will go to the buyers town?

When a villager is in boxes, you go to their town and talk to them. They will say something along the lines of, "I'm moving but I don't know where I'm going..." and it gives you the option to invite them into your town as long as you have space for them and they're not in your 16 villager cycle.

Wow that title really confused me XD

But yeah as the above user said, you can pick up someone else's boxed villager the same way you pick someone up from the campsite and invite them in.
