Today Bonbon from "Hikari" moved into my town. Now, I can vaguely remember perhaps visiting this town a few days ago, perhaps for another villager, but I never talked to this character.* Note also, I have been time travelling several times a day recently, so in game a couple of weeks could have passed (though I always return to the IRL date) and so I would have expected if a character was to move in that they would have done it sooner.
What I'm asking is how does this work? Can a villager just travel over any open gate? I'm not complaining, she's pretty cute, I was just surprised for a villager to move in and tell me about their old town. I'm just not quite familiar with the game's dynamics, it'd be cool if someone could explain it to me.
*in fact I'm not even sure I travelled there, maybe it was the other way around
