I'm not a trend starter, I'm a trend follower.
Here's my top ten of the moment.
#10 - -- This Modern Love - Bloc Party // Indie
Length- 4:25
Album- Silent Alarm (2005)
I listened to this album on my way to work this morning... I wasn't really into bloc party till I heard this one. Great album, this is my favorite song from it, I love the style of singing... they record a sentence at a time, and flip each one from left to right, so you hear it back and forth, it's really cool.
#9 - -- Hallelujah - The Helio Sequence // Indie
Length- 4:30
Album- Keep Your Eyes Ahead (2008)
These guys are great, Not amazing live, they're new, and don't have wonderful instruments yet... Very loud, and uncomfortable live. Their albums however are great, They're kinda Christian/Indie which is a weird mix, and makes them unique.
#8 - -- Clockwork Tin Soldiers - Jonny Greenwood // Indie
Length- 3:07
Album- Bodysong (2003)
Jonny Greenwood is the guitarist of Radiohead, he plays about ten different instruments. He's an amazing musician... This is one of his solo albums, which is also amazing, The whole thing is one big song "Clockwork Tin Soldiers" is just my favorite three minute slice of it all. Jonny Greenwood recently made the soundtrack for a little film called "There Will Be Blood" if anyone has seen that.
#7 - -- She Don't Use Jelly - The Flaming Lips // Indie
Length- 3:52
Album- Transmissions From the Satellite Heart (
One hit wonder... Or classic, depends on your view... I'd call it classic, The Flaming Lips are a great band. This is their most well known song.
#6 - -- Knocked Up - Kings of Leon // Indie
Length- 7:10
Album- Because Of The Times (2007)
This one stands out from the rest of the album, which is strange, because it's the first track... It's noticeably longer, but if you ask me, it's still not long enough...
#5 - -- Wedding Song - Love as Laughter // Indie
Length- 7:25
Album- Trademark of Quality (2007)
This is the best love song i've ever heard, most love songs you hear are some idiot fourteen year old wanting sex, or wondering why his girlfriend broke up with him. people eat it up thinking it's great. Love as Laughter is a band nobody has heard of, they aren't played on the radio, and if you told someone you were listening to them they'd say they suck because of their name. The first three tracks in this album are amazing... it kinda goes downhill from there, sadly.
#4 - -- Life Like Weeds - Modest Mouse // Indie
Length- 6:31
Album- The Moon and Antarctica (2000)
Modest Mouse has it's ups and downs, this is it's peak of excellence. My favorite song on the album, which is saying something, since the album is packed with great songs. Anyone who hasn't heard this album is really missing out, sadly, Modest Mouse got sucked into the mainstream press, and have since only gone downhill... This was their last, untouched, masterpiece.
#3 - -- Like Spinning Plates - Radiohead // Indie
Length- 3:58
Album- Amnesiac (2001)
Random song on my mind... This one has an interesting story... Thom Yorke learned how to sing it backwards, so they recorded it that way, then reversed it in the studio, he also sang it normally, and they mixed the two together to get what we have now. I really like the live version of this as well, the album version didn't have a piano.
#2 - -- All the Go Inbetweens - Silversun Pickups // Indie
Length- 7:50
Album- Pikul (2005)
Very soft, numbing, cold track. Abstract Lyrics, but if you can understand Silversun Pickups' tone throughout all their songs you'd understand this one as well. They have a strange way of communicating, This is my favorite track by them, I really am looking forward to a new album... whenever that may be.
#1 - -- Hits of Sunshine - Sonic Youth // Indie
Length- 11:05
Album- A Thousand Leaves (1997)
This is a short track, for Sonic Youth standards... They have a tendency of stretching songs out beyond long, they like to play really high notes that piss people off... They're art rock with sanity. This is one of their more slow, built up, abstract songs. I'm still trying to figure out the lyrics, it's very deep i just haven't figured out why yet. >.>
Recommendations:
Since most of you don't listen to indie... I'd recommend 7, 9, and 10... those would be the most appealing to anyone who can't stand a song that gets longer than five minutes.
If anyone wants to risk getting mobbed by your friends at school for trying something new, listen to Hits of Sunshine... you might learn something about yourself.
