Stuck in a town-design swamp!

So I started my town a while back, but I never did anything with the design of it. I was happy enough until a few weeks ago, when my friend showed me her town. It was so cool, with forests, bushes, mazes, little design-thingys on the floor... You get the idea. When I got back home, I immediately tried to make a forest, but it didn't work at all... I really need help as I want to have a cool town, so can anyone tell me how to...
Grow forests (what pattern to put the trees in) ?
Grow bushes (where do I get them) ?
Put designs on the ground?
Or anything else that will make for an awesome town?
I would be so grateful. I would put my friend code, but I don't know where to find it, and I haven't done the Dream Suite as a PWP yet. Sorry for so many requests with so little info, but I am getting desperate!

You can get your 'Friend Code' by going to the main menu and clicking the smiley face at the top of your screen.
I suggest watching loads of YouTube videos, and looking at paths by searching 'Path QR codes ACNL'. Have you been talking to Sable everyday at the Able Sisters? If so you can unlock the QR code scanner there.
Just look at loads of videos, that's how I got my inspiration.

I can help link you to some websites that have Dream Addresses, but they also have pictures of other people's towns. It's a way to get inspired without actually using the Dream Suite.

Oh, and as for bushes:
- You can get bushes from the island for 5 medals each
- You can buy bushes from the most upgraded Dept. Store (The T&T Emporium). 2 bushes are sold per day.
- You can visit other people's towns for bushes if they have the Emporium and buy the bushes there

My friend code is 5086 - 3966 - 8309, and I know I only have a very basic town now, my cousin accidently deleted my town, while trying to move in to it, so I am starting again and will definitely use both your advice! Thank you!

There's a recentish thread in this forum (a couple of weeks ago?) about dream town pet peeves, which I also found really helpful when considering town design. The general consensus seemed to be that people like main paths to be 2 tiles/spaces wide and people hate getting trapped in areas by "invisible" bushes planted behind trees. People seem to like fairly obvious pathways, the freedom to wander off the paths if they like, and some degree of colour coordination with flowers, either in the town overall, or within specific areas of town.

The biggest piece of advice I can give: go easy on yourself and don't give yourself a hard time if it takes a while to get things the way you like them. I didn't pay too much attention to landscaping until fairly recently and there's definitely a lot of trial and error involved! For a while I was living in a sneeze of trees and now I'm working to thin them out a little. My town is 2 years old and will never be as fancy as some of the gorgeous towns out there. Ultimately, the most important thing is that your town is pleasing to *you*!

Thanks guys, this is all helpful! Looked up a tutorial on youtube and made a design for my paths (plainn red bricks) and just started laying them there! If anyone wants to come to my town, look above for my friend code! Anyone can add me and if you post/send me YOUR friend code, I'll add you too!

I think I have a perfect cherry I could give you if you game me an axe or 2! And feel free to come to my town anytime! I'm mostly on AC:NL at about 9/10 ish. That goes for everyone else too!
