Spotpass with multiple towns/3DS systems?

I've tried searching for the answer to this question, but I've found contradicting answers so I'm posting just to make sure.

I have a physical copy of ACNL, and I plan on getting a second physical copy to have a second town. I've heard of people using two physical copies on the same 3DS without too much trouble, but how does this affect Spotpass? If Spotpass data is saved to the system/SD card, will both towns get HHA houses/letters from Nintendo if they are played on the same 3DS? Or, does only one town receive the Spotpass perks (maybe the last one you played)?

Also, I'll be getting a 3DS XL for my birthday, and I already own a regular 3DS. I'd like to be able to use both of my 3DS systems to trade and visit within my two towns. Is it possible to play my two physical copies on the 3DS XL most of the time, and only switch one of the cartridges to the old 3DS for trading/visiting? I know the town data itself is saved to the cartridges, but what does this do to the Spotpass data? Would it be deleted?

Basically, if I move a town with Spotpass data tied to the 3DS XL to my old 3DS, will I lose the HHA homes? Or, will they return once I put it back in its original system?

Sorry if this is long and confusing. I'm just scared to lose the Spotpass homes since I still have to go through some of them, and I have Reggie's house xD

Ok I just popped out the cartridge and put it in the 2ds. The houses you acquired from spotpassing people travel with the cartridge. That's what the saving before and after is all about. The only way you lose them is to destroy your town. The only issue I found in trading cartridges is that when you do so, at least in my case, is the spotpass feature gets turned off, so you have to remember to visit the showcase to get it turned back on before you leave the house to go fishing for other DS's.

Thank you! It's a relief to hear that the Spotpass/Streetpass homes are saved to the cartridge... I was afraid they were on the system/SD card, so they'd be lost. That's what I was most concerned about. Thank you again
