Well I used to hate the skate park map until I found a decent spot to snipe from, so I would just play them until you know them well enough to like them. Arowana Mall has this stupid feature where you can accidentally drown tho...

I tried the new gun, honestly I barely like the range of aerospray, so ofc I don't like the range of the splat-o-matic gun either. The bomb spamming is fun for turf wars but I wouldn't try it in ranked? I was hoping it'd end up being a gun I actually enjoy a ton, but nope. Ground coverage is okay, but tentakek even beats the new gun for me.
ON THE BRIGHTSIDE, I played rank with my usual long range gun (Custom jet squelcher) won 7 games in a row and the splat-o-matics were easy to kill. They only stop my control if they use their special but I can normally kill them before they finish all their bombs. (I was close to B+ yday and then dropped down to the lowest B-, now I'm almost back to a regular B again sigh) I literally kept going 11-0 or 16-2 constantly carrying because of whole teams using this short ranged gun lmao

You must be really good at sniping. I try to knock them all out with my Dual Squelcher but they're somehow able to hit me with shots (not bombs) from all the way across the field (out of my range) and splat me in like two hits. Seriously, there is something very wrong there.
It seems like whenever I take up sniping in ranked the whole other team targets me and kills me before I can even line up a shot. Ofc my team is too stupid to take over the zones while everyone is after me.

Ah, man. I've been having lag and disconnection issues today.
On top of that, when I manage to do well on top of that and come up as no. 1 on my team, we still lost a lot.
I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm only good/okay with Custom Jet Squelcher in ranked, since people in turf wars get to me too quick and I can't kill people if they're in my face.
If splat-o-matics are killing you from a far, then that's odd. They literally can't or barely can reach me in the upper grounds of rig, urchin, and the mall. (all the high ground areas located to the sides of the boxes). I often look at my map to make sure no enemy ink is moving behind me, if there is I run away if they're TOO close, or I kraken since that's my special. Also in these three maps, there's a high chance to catch multiple enemies together or in the box, so I run towards them, grab their attention and kraken them. After that it's SUPER easy to defend them off from higher ground.
I constantly cover the box because the range can cover everything which is my priority (literally the only one who actually inks the box lmao)and then I focus on those that are easy kills or on their way to me. If 1-2 are always trying to get me, then that's good and I try to get my special up or run and waste their time while I hope my team can handle the rest.
Random note: I feel like whoever controls behind the box in rig, wins. Just by covering a lot of it in ink, maybe put a few satellites down if there's a roller, and the last member alive can safely hide in the ink and wait for a moment to kill or allow people to squid jump.
Things are a bit more challenging now that there's no full teams of splat-o-matics or the maps I love for ranked. I lost a good team bc of the sister's announcement, so I gave up after a while. It's normal to have bad games tho u.u sorry for the ramble btw

There's really no weapons that are needed/should be unlocked for rank at later levels. I know people use the aerospray RG which is level 15 + beat the third boss in single player mode. (splattershot jr, .52 gal, tentaket, and others are used a lot in ranked)
Lv 15-17 might be a better idea, but if you're comfortable playing, I'd say try it. You do get a lot more points to level if you win, but if you lose you'll most likely get nothing~
