something ACNH related that annoys me:

I'm a native English speaker, and I believe I know how to pronounce all of the names you listed except for Soleil. However, I don't really expect people to pronounce names or words that aren't from their native language "correctly"/with the native pronunciation. I'm learning Korean and Korean has some loanwords from English that are pronounced differently than they are in English. For example, there's no v sound in Korean, so TV in Korean has more of a b sound instead of a v sound. I do agree with you that it would be odd for someone to act like their pronunciation was more correct than the native pronunciation though.

I guess I’m part of the problem ‘cuz I look at those names and I’m like ‘I don’t really see any other way they can be pronounced other than X’, haha.

Unless some dingus actually pronounces it Pie-ay-tro? Hahaha, no way!
My friend pronounces it "pie tro"

Like, the word pie and tro

why

Who is this example that you’re calling out, lol

It sounds like a really small group of people that actually does this. And honestly, people who call something a name and refuse to believe it’s anything else are obviously ignorant in other areas, so i don’t really understand trying to change how they pronounce it when chances are they’re going to continue to be stubborn

not trying to be rude! if i misunderstood something please lmk o;

okay edit... I just found the thread you’re talking about and literally who cares. I thought you were talking about some unruly, trolling kids, but these people are just saying words a little different. Who cares if they say the name of a videogame character where literally nobody in the game pronounces names LOL

it would be different in the characters said their names. Right now it’s up to interpretation, or else there wouldn’t be threads being made about the pronounciation of villager names. It’s a hard habit to break for some, so it would just be easier to stick to your own morals/thoughts and continue to pronounce them the “correct” way on your own.

no, not that thread in general, but it did remind me overall to eventually post this. my post on Audie was another example- idk how to pronounce Audie, so i'm trying to figure out how to and asked a bunch of people (i've teetered between 2 versions). Nobody there really did anything wrong except for one person who said they weren't happy with the TRUE pronunciation which rubbed me the wrong way bc... that's a language

yeah that makes sense, there aren't really specific translations in certain languages so for that it makes sense

i pronounce zucker as zucker bc SUCKERs on a tentacle, never heard tsooker before... sounds cooler
and also mark zuckerberg jokes

It doesn’t bother me too much, the one I don’t like is chèvre. I’m french and I don’t like when people butcher it and go chevrerere and stuff like that (granted it is a hard word to pronounce so I absolutely don’t blame people :) )

It's funny how Merengue should be pronounced like its Spanish form, but most people I heard says the name like in English.
I dunno, people have the liberty to pronounce things whatever they like and that's completely fine.

Or was it French? Hmm...

Mis-pronouncing a name really isn't a big deal. Nintendo isn't telling us how to say their names, and some names are are in unfamiliar forgien languages. Not only that but even 'English' names could be pronounced different depending on dialect or region pronouncing.

i personally don't think that there's any "proper pronunciation" for a word that has been transmitted between languages.

Pronunciations of names should be held in high respect. If I told people my name, it would be silly for another group of people to argue over the correct pronunciation to say my name.

I can help anyone with the French pronunciations but honestly, get in the ball park where people know what you’re trying to say and you’re fine

I mean I think this goes for anything and everything, not just AC haha

I personally don't usually mind, BUT I kind of agree with you in the sense that it tends to tickle me the wrong way when someone explains the proper prononciation or just merely discuss it (without necessarily knowing the right way to say it) and then some people just go like "uh yeah whatever I say it this way so yeah"

Like at least pretend to be interested or listen to what the other person has to say, and if you can't say it the "right" way then it's all good. But don't pretend you know better or that it's pointless to know the actual prononciation...

Never thought twice about Soleil's name (I'm French) but now that I think of it yeah it must be quite a challenge for other languages haha

I don’t have a problem with people pronouncing the villagers names wrong if they have no idea how it’s actually pronounced. However, when someone tells them how it’s pronounced and they continue to pronounce it wrong that bothers me a lot. I will admit that when I first read the Harry Potter books I pronounced Hermione‘s name wrong until I watch the movies and realized how it was actually pronounced and so now I say it properly.
