aww that sucks mate, why did you leave the gates open though? we're you waiting for a trade or something like that? leaving gates open recklessly can cause trouble like this :(

i thought sleep mode automatically turned everything off? from my experience after closing AC in sleep mode i opened it up again and AC wasn't open.

I'm definitely sure sleep mode turns everything off since I just tried it and my 3DS went to sleep mode and went back to the home screen after pressing the home button but okay
 
When ever I am in wifi with somone and I put it on sleep mode it doesn't error, so I am not entity sure :(
