It might be in his inventory or up for re-tail soon?? I send my neighbours stuff all the time and it never ends up in their home
Yeah, they don't always put it in their rooms. I wish they did every time! 
Sometimes they'll sell it back to you when they ding. Love it when they call something I gave them "junk". LOL Bob even said he bought the moon vanity I gave him. I was like "You did NOT, you little twerp!"

Because villagers are fickle animals, and have hearts the like of black, lightless coal.
That, or maybe because it didn't fit in his home and he couldn't find anywhere to place it? I've found that if I give them reasonably large furniture, it will either displace other furniture in their house or they will decide to get rid of that gift instead.

But that's the whole point, I want him to replace that large basketball thing with a bed...
Sending a gift is no guarantee that they'll display, replace or wear it. It will stay in their inventory until they trade it with another villager, put it in Re-tail or try to sell or gift it to you. I've noticed that, if they replace something, they'll only replace 1 item even if I send multiple letters at a given time.
If you really want them to replace something you'll have to wait for them to say the "I want to replace X" or "Show me an item for my room", or something similair. Wait for them to enter their home and than offer the new item. Save & Continue before you do so because they sometimes will replace a different piece of furniture. I've had to reset about 12 times before Ankha finally replaced the right item with the throne I gave her.
Another option you could try is keep sending a bed ever mail round. One with the 9AM mail, one with the 5PM mail, and another one with the 9AM mail if he didn't place it in his room yet. You don't have to wait for their reply letter.

I send villagers full series to see how much of it they put out. I tend to use their favorite colors for stuff

I have simply given up on trying to make my villager's houses look nice. I have sent Apollo so many items from the modern series just to have him replace it with junk. I have just decided to let my villagers ruin their houses. If they want to have no bed and sleep on their cold, hard floor, so be it.
One time, Gabi replaced her bed with a large basketball hoop. I think she got rid of it now, but it was ridiculous. Why would she give up sleeping in a nice bed for basketball?
Don't question her intense love of sports! xD
I gave Friga a whale shark since she asked for an ocean fish. Well, she took out her queen size bed and put it there. She put the pineapple bed for her bed...
Why give up a queen size bed for this tiny 1 space bed?
