So, do you think we will ever get improved dialogues?

It’s again that time of the year in my country...oh wait, I’m not talking about Christmas. I meant lockdown.
Because of that I have soo much spare time and I decided to play WW again. I hadn’t played it for so long so, obviously, it was a big shock compared to NH. At first, I would play for maybe 10 minutes than switch it off but then, it hit me. The amazing villagers and their personalities shining bright. Oh, how much I’ve missed being judged, being told I look ugly in a shirt or simply that I’m annoying them and to piss off. How much I’ve missed having an enemy( yes Tipper, I’m talking about you) and how long it has been since the dialogues made me crack. For real, I had hours of fun, I laughed and really enjoyed talking to villagers finally, after so long.
That had me wonder, will we ever have something similar in NH? Or are we doomed to talk about baking and how sunny it is forever?

I really hope we never get any of that!
I dislike the rude villagers from the past.

I think we have great dialogue in NH, only issue with it is the first time you talk to them each day tends to be only a few words.

But they make me laugh all the time and a year later I'm still hearing new stuff. I really enjoy talking to them as talk to them multiple times each day.

I do also wish there was more difference in sub personalities so that 2 of the same type didn't feel as much as a clone.

I’m happy you are having fun. I find them extremely boring but that’s okay. The most ideal thing would be having the possibility to switch it on or off, so people who enjoy being judged and laugh when villagers get angry can get a bite of that too, without spoiling the fun for others who enjoy villagers always being nice 🙂

This issue was discussed in this thread it was a while ago and to this day its still an issue yet its controversial.

Nintendo don't seem to be fans of giving options like that so I think it would more than likely be for everyone or for no one.
However from my perspective I don't see the harm in such a choice. I'd be happy for those who preferred that style if they had the choice to enable it

Honestly, not entirely. What I mean by that is we might get 'better' dialog referring to newly introduced mechanics (Like the art exhibit, festivale ect), but I highly doubt that they will change the main dialog. I agree that I miss the rudeness from villagers, but I can't see it returning that much outside of a few small comments per personalities (usually seen whenever you talk to villagers too much, oddly)

Seeing how we don't have basic gameplay settings like audio balance, I really doubt there would ever be more advanced options like switching villager behaviour. It looks like somewhere along the road they decided to not have a central settings menu and that's what we're stuck with for now.

I would have loved to see some of the personalities be a bit different in NH, but I doubt they'd suddenly change those too. Best thing we can hope for is more dialogue, but then again, even if they doubled the amount of sentences for villagers to say we'd still be seeing repeats all the time.

I don't know. I've accepted the fact that they don't have any interesting things to tell me by now. Would love to see it improved, but there are many other potential additions that would make me much happier.

I’m afraid that’s gonna be it. I mean, it’s not only the rudeness, I do understand that some people might not like it while others, like myself, always found it hilarious. It’s just the comments that give villagers their personalities. You know, them taking about what they like and what they don’t, which villager they are most friend with and how much they hate the island tune that plays every hour.

Same, that’s why I went back to WW. There’s not much to do there, once you have fished and caught some bugs that’s about it. That’s the reason why you talk so much to the villagers and that’s why in that game it’s pivotal for them to have such amazing dialogues. There’s a lot to do in NH, from terraforming to decorating every inch of your island. If only they made the villagers more interesting, with their personalities shining through dialogues, it could really have been the perfect game 🥺

I’m extremely doubtful that this will be any kind of priority to Nintendo. I think what we have is what we have. I would definitely appreciate if they updated to include an option to ask villagers if they need any help to do a side quest though. I’ve only had one villager this year randomly ask me to do a favor so far.

Yeah I don’t see Nintendo making these kinds of changes to the game, that would require adding enormous amounts of dialogue to the game and that’s just not in Nintendo’s priorities given how successful the game is. It would be nice but to be honest I think that a few smaller updates to the game would be better appreciated and help a bit with the issue such as villager requests and maybe even mini games. Don’t see them doing any of this though. Maybe next installation of the series will be an improvement on dialogue if the hardcore fans keep raising the issue.

It would be nice if they just added more dialogue period, but yeah it would be cool for the Cranky and Snooty types to be a bit more rude.
I must say though, I really dislike how rude the gamecube villagers are, as funny as it would be for Bob to tell me to get lost and curse my existence, it would make me feel a bit off put that my best buddies are so...terrible to me lol. But yeah, Wild World or City Folk type dialogue would be nice, I think that one did it best. (Also imo New Leaf dialogue is really dry, New Horizons is way better on that front.)

I may get flack for this but I'm just going to say it. What really made me disappointed on the one year anniversary is that none of my villagers told me how "great" it was to have an island after 1 year later and didn't even acknowledge it was all thanks to me that I made the island. This game just makes me so disconnected from my villagers.

New Horizons is my first Animal Crossing game. I've been playing since release of New Horizons (I bought it because I was playing ACPocketCamp and I fell in ❤), so it's interesting to see everyone's opinions on the villager personalities and dialogue!

Do I think the dialogue is repetitive? Yes. Do I also think this game has the most dialogue? Yes.

After a year of playing what I’ve noticed is that if you don’t change your play style, you’ll always get the same dialogue. Of course villagers will always give the repetitive lines of dialogue first unfortunately, but after that they have so much to say and so many unique things.
For example they have dialogue based on...
  • where they are on your island
  • buildings around them
  • what you’re holding
  • what they’re holding
  • if they are sitting
  • if they have a villager over their house
  • if they are at another villagers house
  • what clothes you are wearing (this is a huge one because they comment based on your style, if the outfit works or doesn’t work, if it’s season/weather appropriate or if it’s not, etc.)
  • how often you have been wearing that one outfit
  • if they are wearing clothes you gave them
  • if they are near certain furniture items (and this one I want to exaggerate because they talk about base game items that have always been there fairly generically, but then they talk specifically about basically any item that has been introduced since release. They notice if you put out Bunny Day furniture out of season as well as if you put it out in season. They comment on the wedding furniture in a unique way. Again, all furniture from update for the most part has specific dialogue)
  • the special characters that are visiting your island (you can basically find out if Celeste is in your island by talking with your villagers instead of running laps to find her)
  • who has visited your island
  • things that you liked that you have mentioned in the past
  • if they are in a certain shop
  • what personality type they are taking to when talking to another villager

I’m sure there’s more but I just wanted to try to explain how there is SO MUCH dialogue but a lot of it is very specific and requires you to speak to your villagers multiple times a day, that unless you are often changing the way you play and the world around you, you won’t really notice it.
EDIT: I thought of a few more
  • Dialogue based on the weather
  • Dialogue based on if they like or don’t like gifts. This dialogue is different depending on if you have them the gift or if they got the gift from another villager.
  • Dialogue based on you telling them about a delivery you did for them

The way they went about doing it, is not too good and it should be different dialogue for everyday so that it always feels fresh and not so repetitive.

I've never complained about the dialogue in NH...because we're now a year in and I still see things I've never seen before, so it's enough for me.

I had Ozzie as my lazy pretty much all of last year, so I got used to most of his dialogue. I let him go last month and moved in Elmer, who told me he saw Label go by and didn't say anything because he was afraid of burping.
Ozzie never laid those lines down lol

Wait that’s hilarious. I’ve never heard them say anything like that! I love when they talk about NPCs. Like today Kody told me that Flick will be psyched if I give him a big, muscular bug whereas Cherry told me about how stylish he is.

The GameCube version was definitely too harsh. I mean, I can’t lie, now that I’m 23 I would find it hilarious but as a kid, mhh, I don’t know. But then again, unfortunately I never played the GameCube version because I was too young when it came out. But I played a lot of WW and when I think about that time, I only remember how close I was to my villagers. I don’t think that dialogues with a bit of sessyness made me feel sad or attacked. On the contrary, winning the heart of your enemy was the best feeling ever. I mean, even small things. On the first day, for example, one of the villager asks you for your birthday and your favourite quality in others, and I answered kindness. Tipper looked at me and said: “Mhh, kindness, I see” and then she smirked. It’s not rude but definitely sassy and with a lot of the snooty personality, which should be a little judgy and snobby. In NH they call you darling and dear and compliment your outfit no matter what you are wearing. That’s what I miss, sassyness and personality 😬

I can definitely agree with this. I thought for SURE there was going to be SOMETHING about having the island for a year. Not just because it was the anniversary, but because it was a year for my island's founding. There should be some kind of celebration for the anniversary of your island's creation, whenever that anniversary may be. And the fact that it's not mentioned by ANYBODY is incredibly jarring for me.

That said, I do still come across some dialogue I've never had before. BUT I also have never been one to run around and talk to my villagers like six times a day. I had Bianca move in fairly recently, and for the first time she mentioned however many miles away the moon is and said she was going to walk around the beach that much, and to just call her Moon Tiger. Now I don't know if that's a Peppy villager thing, but if it is, none of my other Peppy villagers I've had have ever said anything like that. Bianca is my first "tiger" villager though, so I'm wondering if it might be a species thing? But I feel like not, because I know that Snooty villagers say something about being up early because "the early (insert species here) gets their to do list done."
