Slowdown and lag in dreams

I've only recently started visiting dreams, and I noticed a few islands I visited had a lot of lag and slowdown to the point of being almost unplayable.

I assume this is a frame rate drop due to the amount of assets on the screen. Does anyone know if this is solely related to custom paths and patterns? Or could it also be from just having a bunch of regular items out or a ton of trees, etc.?

In my experience it seems related to the amount of objects packed into one area. On some islands I'll notice that some sections are really laggy, but then when I get out of range of the stuff it gets a little better. I'll also throw in that I use practically no custom patterns, but I experience lag in spots where there are a lot of furniture items, or waterfalls. I don't know how or if trees affect anything.

I think it’s related as to how many moving objects there are. Solid, unmoving objects like statues aren’t as big of a problem as a field of flowers, all moving in the wind. The biggest framerate dip I’ve gotten was from an island that had dozens of spinning furniture (colored wheels, pinwheels, etc) all mashed into one area.

Custom patterns with a bunch of colors also seem to cause a nasty frame rate dip. I’m on an island with a heavy emphasis on neon colors and they have custom brick patterns everywhere and it’s causing bigtime lag. I’d suggest either using custom patterns sparingly or use patterns that don’t have a lot of wild color changes.

I've noticed the most amount of lag when there are a lot of moving objects all in a close area (flowers blowing in the wind, waterfalls, etc.) but generally I think it's based on how many items there are in a section for the game to load

It is definitely based on 'moving' objects. Main reason why designing my island has become a massive chore, because I am trying to find a middle ground but still allows me to use a decent amount of trees and flowers paired with furniture.

I want my island to be not too laggy.

i don't know what it is specifically, though it hasn't had anything to do with custom paths in my experience, only objects (and maybe flowers). any area densely packed with objects will slow down the frame-rate/character speed drastically, and it only gets worse if they're moving objects. once i move out of that specific area, it's usually fine, unless that area is also densely packed. it's one of the reasons i stopped visiting dream towns; the massive lag spikes just ruined the experience and made too many areas of too many islands a chore to view/go through.

I wouldn't be surprised if the lighting engine is to blame a little as well in these situations.

I agree with this, I've noticed more lag in areas that have lots of different light sources when it's darker out

Yeah I’ve noticed this as well. It discourages me from dreaming tbh. I’ve also experienced it most on islands with a lot of decorations

I've been to a few dream islands with a lot of lag. Doesn't bother me too much there, but I can't imagine actually owning one of those islands. On one hand I'm glad they gave us complete freedom to place as much furniture as we want, but I can also see why they put a 30 PWP limit in New Leaf.

My island is chock full of custom paths and I don't experience lag in most of the areas, so I would probably say it's more on the items and moving objects. I've visited some cluttered islands that didn't lag terribly, but the most of the items were loading on and off in my screen that it becomes a little annoying with every step I take.

My island is pretty packed too in some areas but I rarely experience lag, maybe only at the beginning when everything loads. Sometimes I get self conscious that people might have negative experiences on my island during online play, but it’s fine when I play on my own so I wouldn’t sacrifice my landscaping and item placement for that. No matter what the island, I seem to experience pop-ins when I exit photo mode, especially when I zoom out or leave the scene and the orientation pans back to me. The camera IU will be fine but once I go back into normal mode it takes a split second for the items to load in again. Lag doesn’t really deter me from visiting islands though. I usually just walk slowly and take everything in and it’s fine.

Yeah, I actually noticed most islands don't lag horribly as they used to? I have an area on my island that's a bit laggy but I think the items loading on and off the screen are helping the game prevent too many things at the screen all at once. It's definitely easier to enjoy islands if you walk slowly!

I think pop-in/lag has been reduced significantly since the last update. Walking through cluttered towns used to be really sluggish and unbearable, but now it’s not as bad. Or so it seems.
