Me and my friends have heaps of Yen left over from Japan and we put 5 1Yen coins in a vending machine and we get free drinks We've done it several times.

Depends on the size and weight. If you have something that looks exactly the same size as a nickle, and weighs about the same, you can get something that costs a nickle, and so forth.
