Signature advice

I'll be the first to admit I'm not the most computer savvy
Is it possible to use a .gif image as a signature? I'm sure I've seen users with lovely animated signatures, but when I try to upload one, it refuses.
If anyone would be able to assist I'd be very grateful!

I think the people with animated signatures host it off-site, so that they can just hyperlink it. Allows for a larger filesize than the picture uploader allows.
