If that doesnt work out for you guys, the shovel diy is still given to you fairly early on in the game. There isnt too much you can do with it on day one anyway. You'll get it soon though! 
To be specific, make sure you donate 5 bugs or fish to Tom Nook, and once you have a spot for the museum, the next day Blathers will set up his tent and give you the Diy.
