I started a new town called Red Pine a few days ago. It took me 2-3 hours of resetting to get this town. There are a lot of things a like about it, but there are some things I wish were different. Here is the map of it:

Red Pine map.jpg

Things I really like:

  • The river is short and there are only two ponds which means a ton of open space to work with.
  • Re-Tail is in the perfect spot for me. I like having it near the train station and it is literally a stone's throw away. It also has my favorite pond of the three possible ponds.
  • The large pond is in a really good location. I like it on the northern half so I can plant cedar trees around it and I like that it isn't in the middle because building bridges around a large pond in the middle is a pain.
  • The town hall and plaza are in good spots. I like having the plaza not on the edge of the map because then I can plant a circle of trees around it. I like having the town hall near the train tracks so that I don't have to worry about what to do with the space behind the town hall.
  • Apples are the native fruit which I like the most for this town. Peaches and cherries would be okay, but I really don't want oranges or pears.

Things I wish I could change:

  • I don't like the pond in front of the train station. I could work around it, but I wish it were not there.
  • I don't like the beach that much. I was hoping for a private beach and a vertical ramp leading to the dock. Instead I have a long beach with only one access point and it's a horizontal ramp which faces away from the rest of the map which is inconvenient. I was also hoping for an East facing beach since my other town has a West facing one and I'd like a different perspective.
  • There is a really annoying rock where I am standing in the screenshot.
  • The town hall and plaza are in good, but not perfect locations for me. I'd like the town hall one acre to the left so it's closer to the train station and everything else. I'd also like the plaza one acre to the right so it isn't right in the middle since having it in the middle makes it harder for me to run straight paths through my town.

Should I keep this map or keep resetting in hopes of finding another map which has most of the features I like about this map but doesn't have the flaws? Do you think if I keep resetting, I'll inevitably end up with a worse map than the one I currently have in my pursuit for perfection? I don't want to spend a ton of hours map resetting, but I also don't want to invest a ton of hours in a map which I ultimately become dissatisfied with.

The pond in front of the train station is a bit tricky but rocks will always be there, unfortunately. You just have to make the town perfect yourself but if you're really a perfectionist I guess you could reset it.

I have that pond myself and I actually think it's quite cool and although it's annoying to path between the pond and the rock, I've been able to work around it and it looks pretty nice walking along the pond (in my case with a diagonal path), though it does block the way sometimes. I've made a second path from the train station leading to the east though, and I'm really not bothered by it.
I think the map is really nice and I wouldn't reset it; all maps will have their flaws and you'll never find a perfect map. Working around those flaws and making it look nice is what makes a good town. :)

The plaza is in such a lovely place! Also I don't think I can give you much good advice so I'll just say, sometimes I find the annoying things in a town can make you think up alternatives to where you'd put paths and such. Like the annoying rock for example you might be able to come up with a solution that works well with the rock, like better than you would have even thought possible in the first place. Some of my favourite spots in my town were spots I used to hate at the beginning because they were so awkward to work with!

I'd says there's plenty good things on this map that'd make me want to stick with it, but also because I wouldn't want to risk not being able to find another good map for awhile :)

You should reset depending on how much it will bug you that it's not perfect. I think I would have kept that map if I was looking for the things you were looking for, most things are in a good location. And if you try and get it more perfect than this you will most likely spend hours, that's for certain. I think what would bug me most about your map is the rock, but you could use it to build a cute flowerbed around it or something.

I recently reset my town and spent a total of 5+ hours trying to get a very specific map (south facing waterfall, peaches, a secluded spot next to the waterfall, starshaped snow and generally things in a good location) and honestly after having spent over a day on an off resetting, I ended up settling for less, even if I knew there was more suitable maps, heck I had had them earlier.

I reset my new town for over a week before finally finding a map I loved. Granted, I ended up with pears, but I was looking for them anyway (only native fruit I'm missing between my and my hubby's towns), nice sized private beach, only one little pond by Re-Tail, and from what I can tell, the rocks aren't in "deal breaker" spots.

It really just comes down to if you can deal with the little things, or if they are too much of a hassle for what you have planned for your town.

I only reset my town to get a particular fruit so I have no idea how long it would take, but I think the map you have looks really nice and the pros seem to outweigh the cons.

You can always work around 'imperfections', but if those things really bother you I'd say reset :c
IMO your map looks perfect ^ v ^)b

Thank you for this post. I guess part of my obsession with getting a "perfect" map is that I feel like I've already made lemonade out of lemons with my other town. I feel like I did a really good job with Catopia considering I didn't map reset at all when I made that town, but there are still some things which I can't get over because of the map. I've thought of some alternative ways to arrange paths and stuff so that the rocks and the train station pond wouldn't be that big of a deal. I figure if I run two vertical paths along the sides of the plaza, I can avoid the pond and it will look better than running paths directly through the plaza which I did in Catopia due to having the plaza on the edge (which makes it annoying whenever an event puts a cardboard cut-out right on top of my path). For the rock which really annoys me, I've thought about using the police station to get rid of it since I'd probably put it around there anyway. I'm leaning towards keeping this town. I'll see where I can put bridges tomorrow when I get my development permit and then come to a decision after that.

It?s a good map, I like the location of the buildings and the beach is okay, but personally I?d reset because of the annoying pond in front of the train station, it just gets in the way. But if you can work around it, you should keep it.

Map resetting for something 100% perfect can be annoying, but I feel like I'd rather spend a lot of time resetting for a map that I love than settling and regretting it months down the road when I've already made loads of progress.

Personally I like the river on that map and the plaza location, but the rest I'm not fond of, especially the ponds. I always go for one-pond maps.

If these many things are bothering you, they will always bother you. You pro arguments aren't uncommon with maps, and you can always trade for fruits on here.

With the fruit, I want apples to be my native fruit so I can plant perfect apple trees. Perfect oranges and pears don't look that good to me, so that's why I prefer at least cherries or peaches if I'm not going to have apples as my fruit.
