From what I know so far your island doesn't start with any shops which is fine but what I was thinking is will the shops be on your island or on a separate area, much like the city in city folk.
I personally always liked being able to travel to different areas (tortimer island etc) and I think it would be really cool if we could use the plane to visit different islands with different shops, plus not having the shops on your main island frees up some space.
The only problem is i feel like it would be really inconvenient to travel every time you wanted to buy/ sell something (going from the beach to reese's was bad enough!)

What is eveyones opinion on this, do you think the shops will be on your island like in ww, a completely separate area like in cf or a designated part of your island like in nl ?

That depends on the size of the island. The airplane/helicopter is probably used to visit (online) friends, but it might also be used to visit another island or mainland with shops. I wouldn't mind having to travel somewhere else to go shopping, though I prefer it to be on a seperate space on my own island, like in NL. I like the idea of having the shoppig district close, but not have it take up space on the island itself. I also wonder if there's going to be anything like a town hall being built for events and the like.
I really hope it's not going to be like in WW where everything is in one place. It just seems so messy and with all the other villagers' houses will take up a lot of space I'd rather use for landscaping.

I'd be annoyed if I had to deal with a loading screen every time I wanted to sell or buy something tbh. I'd prefer it if all the shops were buildable on our island, but we could place them.

It looks like most of the main shops you unlock will end up in the same area as Nook's tent, but it does seem a little small to fit everything there so I wouldn't be surprised if there are different places you can visit!

I was wondering if you could place certain buildings wherever you want in your town, kind of like the cafe and police station projects in NL, but there are so many NPCs that it would still get pretty cramped if they all live on that little island right?? It would be fun to have a centre for more special shops and services that we need to travel off the island to get to

No I'm pretty sure the rest of the plaza is for events like the fishing tourney for example to set up the tent, I'm guessing. Fitting a bunch of shops in that plaza would be a cluttered mess.

I think nooks tent will upgrade eventually to be a main shop to buy furniture and sell and hopefully it will be more traditional because I dont like how you buy things from a menu with timmy/Tommy.

They implied that you unlock and build certain shops/facilities for the island but I'm hoping that's just stuff like police station, roost, town hall. I want the other shops to be in area we have to fly to. I really dont want every shop on that island. There isn't enough room for all of that. Seriously just try to imagine main street from new leaf and putting it in on that island. That would take up like a good 1/5 of precious land.

Seeing how the space is distributed and the info they've released, I think that we'll only have some basics shops (Tom Nook's tent that I also believe will get upgraded and maybe the most basic ones like the caf? and Leif's), and there'll be another place like the city in City Folk with more specific shops like Gracie's or Katrina). Not sure who will be there and who on the island but I would go with that distribution.

A shopping district island would be nice. Like Main Street, but on and island. You would go to the airport dock and fly there using the same plane you would to visit friends. Like crossing the train tracks in New Leaf, but it doubles as a way to shop and visit friends. I imagine going to the shopping district island would have the same loading time as crossing the street to Main Street in NL for convenience. Re-tail should definitely stay on your island, though. It should stay the quickest way for making bells fast.

The museum, police station, and similar recurring services will likely be built on your island with the help of Isabelle or the Nooks. I also see Amenities from PC taking over PWPs entirely. Placing furniture outside allows for a wider variety of decoration and attraction, which is better than paying 32,000 bells on installing a useless fire hydrant in NL. I could totally see the Tree House and Merry-go-Round from PC being Amenities that can be built, just like PWPs. I'd say they would cost around 300,000 bells, since they're much bigger and more than decoration.

I'd prefer the shops to be in town because I really wouldn't want a loading screen just to shop -_- The map looks small though but hopefully it'll be bigger by release.

There's already a loading screen to main street from the town.

A shopping district on another island doesnt necessarily have to be a long loading screen.

god I really hope they use the amenities from pc, like you said, they're so much more useful than a fire hydrant or a stop sign and there's nothing better than seeing your villagers interact with the town

I'm not sure. I was OK with the loading screen in New Leaf, but I kinda miss having the shops in town. If we didn't have to go to another place to shop, then that's fine with me. My first game was Wild World, so you can see why I like the shops in the town and not somewhere else.

honestly? i won't mind traveling to a different island if it means i get more real estate on the island to decorate it however i want. i really hope that nintendo takes advantage of the cartridge technology to load in the "main street" or "city" or whatever they're calling it this time really quickly this time around. i think most people would adjust pretty well if it only took a few seconds to hop from the mainland to another island.

online, however, is a different story...

Please let it be like in NL... I don't always want to visit another Islands just for some shopping. But I also don't want to have too many shops in my town.

I hope we can place any shop anywhere. Like I could put one near the beach or one near the airport.

As long as the shopping district (if it were on a separate island) isn't "online" then I'm fine with it. But if it is, I'll be disgusted.

I got the feeling you could place shops anywhere on your island just like a public works project. At least you don't have to worry about having re-tail being located all the way in the corner should this idea actually exist in the game.

My thought is that maybe the more shops you build, you unlock a new certain area at some point
which is connected with your town and where all shops can be found then, kinda like Main Street
2.0.

Alternative, maybe you can decide which shops will be on your island while other shops can be found
at a different area, like you can have Timmy & Tommy's shop, the Able Sister's as well as the museum
in your island/town (like it was in the older AC games) and the rest of the shops are somewhere else.
