Sharing Your Island

I want to know about other’s experiences with sharing an island! This is for those of you who have two or more residents on your island.

Who do you share it with?
How did you decide on a name for your island?
How do you divide up resources and duties?
Would you say one person does more than the other(s) in terraforming, decorating, etc?
What do you like about sharing your island?
And what do you dislike about it?

Spoiler: I personally....

I personally share my island with my boyfriend. The Switch is his and I don’t have my own, so we share. I must admit, at first I was skeptical about playing Animal Crossing as it didn’t seem like a good multiplayer game. (And in a lot of ways it isn’t) So I wasn’t too into the game at first and my bf did most things. He named the island, he is the island representative, and was the one to randomly choose places for buildings to go in the beginning. However over time I slowly became obsessed with them game and now I find that I’m the one who plays WAY more than my bf. While we still discuss what we want to put on our island together, it’s mainly me who decides things and gets all of the items to decorate with. I did a majority of the terraforming and decorating on our island. We still will share resources with each other but I do most of the “chores” for the day, like taking care of the flowers.
I do like that having a second resident gives more opportunities for finding diys and money holes and such. I also like being able to collaborate on something.
I do sometimes wish I could just have my own island as I have certain ideas in my head that are hard to do without his cooperation (mainly I want to decorate his house differently than what he has currently). But he is very lenient with how we decorate the outside, so I suppose I’ll let him have his freedom in his own house

I guess I technically share an island with my boyfriend haha

He wanted to try playing so I tried including him in the island creation process. I came up with 5 potential island names and he chose his favorite one. I’m the island rep & it’s my Switch. He helped in the beginning with fishing and getting resources, but it’s completely my island now lol he gave up on the game 3 weeks in but he still comes on during the tourneys or special events.

honestly though, the biggest reason he gave up on it is probably because local co-op is so difficult and annoying.. it was fine sharing an island but there was a lot of back and forth on villager choices in the beginning and island theme ideas

I agree the local co-op can be annoying. There are several things you can’t do while you’re both playing and it’s really frustrating. Like I don’t understand why we couldn’t both go to a mystery island. Or find a scallop for Pascal. I’d rather be able to play together with everything included (like playing multiplayer and going to other’s islands or inviting them to ours) than have to take turns all the time.

YESS!! Ugh it’s so frustrating to have to take turns the second player can’t even open inventory or use the tool ring and it suckssss

I share with my brother.

It was a name that I chose in New Leaf. I asked my brother if he wanted a different name. He couldn't decide on one, so we went with our current island name.

How do you divide up resources and duties?
There are six boulders on the island. I hit three, he hits three. If there is a Bell boulder, whoever hits it first marks it with a pattern so the other can get Bells, too. If I move houses, since I'm the only one who can, my brother helps pay.

Would you say one person does more than the other(s) in terraforming, decorating, etc?
No.

What do you like about sharing your island?
More stuff.

And what do you dislike about it?
Coming up with ideas that conflict with one another.

Separately. We've had some conflict in the past. He wanted to create a garden, but I wasn't sure how much space that was going to use up and if it was going to be in the way. Eventually, I tore everything down and he put a garden up in the northwest corner of the island. I've kind of been working a bit here and there on the island. I have ideas, I'm just lazy at this point.

oh wow so you guys never co-op? Do you ever watch each other play or you both just play on your own and take turns that way?
I can imagine then that one of you could add or change something about the island and the other one not know about it until logging in to see it

We've asked each other what one thought about certain appearances on the island. Sometimes I see what he's doing, but I mostly do my own thing when he's playing.

I’m glad my sister and I have separate switches because sharing an island with her would be an absolute pain. We have completely different tastes and like completely different villagers (not to mention co-op is so annoying in nh)

But I agree lol. I don’t think we’d be able to agree on anything... Having to take turns would be torture
