Setting limits on your online trading
I've seen people on here say they want to breed their own hybrids, experience seasonal items in the right season, etc. I'm in a weird situation where my husband and I have decided to only use our own Islands for the stalk market!
So, where do you draw the line to maximize your enjoyment of the game?
After being afraid to go online at all last week, I'm now addicted to it and worried it's taking time away from working on my island! But I will happily go online to get Nook Mile Items, catalogue some furniture, but not too much, and trade DIYs. But, no stalk market, no out of season items or critters. I'll pick up a couple of hybrids and then hope to grow my own from them.
All flowers are grown by me. Stalk market is only on my own island (honestly, mainly because the popularity of NH makes the idea of waiting in lines to sell unappealing). Bugs and fish only caught on my island. I don't trade for the seasonal stuff.
That's really it. It sounds like a lot, but there's still tons of furniture and DIY to potentially trade for.
The only ones from the list that I prefer not to go online for are fossils and catching bugs and fish. Those I want to reserve for my own enjoyment, as well as for my own experience. I still find it enjoyable trying to hunt down these things that are merely based on chance and luck.
Everything else, I can justify to go online for. Especially furniture cataloging, as it is almost impossible to achieve all the items you want, especially if you have to wait for Nook's Cranny to change their selection everyday. In addition, the Nook Miles items also have selected variations depending on your island, so in order to get a consistent design, you're almost forced to go online and trade with others if you're after a specific colour or design type.
You gotta know that the sky belongs to no one.
For me it’s flowers, bugs, fish, fossils. I love chasing after all of these things myself. I love the museum and I like the feeling of knowing I complete it by my own doing.
i think i'm with a lot of people on limiting for fish/bugs and seasonal events. it's more fun personally to me to experience that with the change of seasons IRL.
that being said, if i waited for redd to appear on my island to complete my museum, it might take me 5 years lmao and i don't really mind going online for that
i have lots of friends who play acnh, spread across several friend groups, so it’s not often that i go out of my way to purchase or trade for something online :0 if i’m not trading with a friend, i’ll generally sell things on TBT for NMT (since i island hop a lot), purchase hybrids in bulk, or purchase NMT in bulk.
I personally do have kind of a lot of limits to my online trading. My "rules" are basically this:
-I bred every color of hybrid on my own (including blue roses, which I'm not sure I ever want to do again lol. But it was nice to try it myself.)
-I don't trade for seasonal items or golden tools that I shouldn't technically have yet.
-I've collected ~90% of my DIYs on my own, however I do think I'm going to start trading for some soon. I'm missing a lot of wreaths and flower crowns, which I really want.
-I do trade for posters, Nook Miles items in different colors, and the alternate variants of whatever the current month's 'Mom' items are. I also occasionally trade for furniture or clothing, but most of what I have, I acquired on my own.
-I collect all of my fossils on my own.
There are probably more that I'm not thinking of. But the gist of it is that, while I do a lot of 'selling' online, I generally prefer to collect most items on my own.
I’m only interested in trading for furnitures & DIYs, and going to see Celeste/meteor showers. I’m in a small daily watering group too. I want my flowers myself (though I have been tipped hybrids!) and I’m not interested in getting stuff out of season be it DIYs or catchables.
I have a small group of friends and we do stalk market together. Selling at 500+ by finding people online every week is tempting but then I’m not really gambling anymore and thats a bit of the fun for me.
I only really trade to complete my catalogue, or more specifically, for the variations that are easier to get from other players than relying on balloon drops or islanders giving them to me.
I tend to do stalk market online too but only amongst a circle of friends.
Lately I haven't had any patience for watering flowers to grow my own hybrids (why do the tools have to break!!), so I've been buying them here. And for some reason I'm terrified of selling turnips on strangers islands so I only do that with my friends.
Some other things that didn't fit in the poll -
Villager photos
Villager posters
Services - like crafting, watering, etc.
Bait is a big one at the moment!
Mom's items
Birthday items
I don't think I'll go online for any of the above either. Even though I hate making bait.
I don't go out of town for anything museum related (fishing, catching bugs, fossils, art), hybrids, out of seasons DIYs/items. However, with how rare Redd is, and the fact that I'm also not using a guide, I'm rethinking my rule about not visiting Redd on other islands. It's just going to be YEARS before I complete my art exhibit at this rate. I'm going to try to hold off as much as possible, but this is the one thing I might cave on eventually.
I don't really want to trade for any art, I have purchased one piece of art from someone, the twinkling painting, but it was for my home not my museum.
I only want to catch bugs on my island, mystery islands or friends islands who don't time travel and are on the same hemisphere.
Catching new bugs and fish each month is something I look forward to, so I don't like catching them on other peoples islands!
now please I will accept the money-payment
Yeah I don't do art or fossil trading. Yes I've had the same 3 or 4 missing fossils for like a month now. Might cave in and work with my irl friends to find our missing ones together.
I also breed my own hybrids, but I'll have to see how desperate I get for the blue rose. I don't plan on tackling that one until I have all the other hybrids, though.
An apology forpointingoutthewhy was stated longago
I tend to do an online trade if something I am really wanting/needing isn't showing up at the time in the randomness of balloons and shops. I don't do flowers and i have only done fossils because i needed two left for my outside display i am putting together. seasonal diy cards I don't do unless the season is almost over and I still didn't get them (cherry blossom event was difficult and I hope there won't be a repeat of that). And to get rid of my extra diy cards for ones I don't have.
I definitely trade/buy with/from other people for turnip prices and hybrids, as well as furniture and clothes. I prefer to collect all fossils, bugs and fish completely by myself. As for art or celeste diys, I also collect them myself but idm going to other people's islands if they have celeste or redd since they dont really appear by themselves or if someone is giving something away. Seasonal diys I will definitely collect by myself except for bunny day because I missed the easter event. In general I prefer to collect all diys by myself too or get them from friends or open islands when their villagers are crafting but I've been to a couple of islands where the person was giving away diys for free and I took the ones I didnt have, but starting to regret that now. Nook mile items I trade for the different colours because I dont think I could get those on my own?
I try to do as much as I can on my own. I may have to go online to salvage my turnip sales this week, and I'm not adamantly against doing anything listed. I think I'm just too lazy to take advantage of online play. I'll probably end up cutting it next month.
I trade basically anything except seasonal diy's and bugs and fish. everything else is fair game in my books.

I don't go online for hybrids and stalk market. I keep the turnips between my fiance and RL friends. It's more fun when there's a risk where we could all lose some money. It's also fun to always check in and ask each other turnip prices. However, most of us don't buy turnips at this point anymore.
I usually don't get hybrids or go catch bugs and fish on other islands. I did get some blue roses from someone at one point as trade for a hyacinth lamp DIY, but I think those were the only hybrids I didn't grow myself. I don't go out of my way to get seasonal stuff and fossils either, but I have picked up a seasonal item and a fossil here and there from random giveaways. Other than that, I've actively tried to get the other things on the poll via online trading at some point~
