Separate game files on different 3DS?

Hi! Its been a while since I was on this forum but Ive been playing AC since lol... anywho i have kind of a weird question, i posted on my tumblr earlier but nobody helps over there... so I wanted to know if anybody knew here. Also sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didnt see anything like this in the help thread so if its wrong feel free to lock/move or whatever :<

So a few years back I had to get a new 3DS because my old one couldn?t connect to the internet any more for some reason (so I couldn?t connect with friends or download updates anymore)

And so i got to download the Animal Crossing amiibo update on my new 3DS in 2016

And since it?s rlly hard to take photos and access the memory card on the new 3DS, I decided to play it on my old 3DS again to take certain pictures of my town but the game is like completely reset? I didn?t do anything to my old memory card or anything, but just when I went to play AC on there it was like I started new game

So? if I were to start a new game on my old 3DS, could I keep it just on that 3DS? Would the new data transfer over if I played again on my new 3DS or would it be like having two separate game files? (also sorry Im rlly dumb about this sort of stuff :<)

Askin seriously because I rlly been thinking of getting another game / town for a few years now because I don?t want to reset lol

It sounds like you didn't download the Amiibo update on your old 3DS.If you had done that then your game would play the same on both machines(assuming you're using the same game cartridge for both).The Amiibo update is stored on your SD card and your game saves on the cartridge.I have multiple DS's and I had to download the update on every machine I have.
